This month, for the month of July, we want to highlight the company’s owner, Kim Tweedel, as our Employee of the Month at Advocates for the Independent.
We celebrate her continuous dedication to her clients and the Houstonians she has been serving since 2010. Please take a quick minute to thank Kim and read her story below.

My Home Care Journey – Kim Tweedel
Many have asked why I got into home care. The answer begins with my grandmother. At 90, she was still independent—driving and gardening. But after a fall left her blind, everything changed. Her confusion worsened, and on Christmas Day, she ended up in the ER. She was discharged to a skilled nursing facility, but the care was heartbreaking. I’d find her on the floor, and the staff showed little compassion. She kept saying, “I want to go home.”
Home care options were limited. The agency I hired wasn’t equipped for dementia care. Eventually, we found a small care home where she stayed until her passing.
That experience never left me. Years later, I felt called to create something better. With my background as a respiratory therapist and experience in healthcare, I started Advocates for the Independent to provide the care my grandmother deserved.
15 years later, we’re still guided by her memory—treating every client like family and helping them stay independent. That mission continues to drive me every single day.
