Today, we proudly recognize National Nurse Practitioner Week – a time to honor the incredible Nurse Practitioners (NPs) at our facility and across the country who bring skill, compassion, and accessibility to healthcare every single day. NPs are the heartbeat of patient-centered care – listening, diagnosing, treating, and advocating with unmatched dedication. While this week shines a spotlight on their contributions, their impact is felt all year long in hospitals, clinics, and communities nationwide.

To all our NPs: thank you for making healthcare more human, more reachable, and more exceptional.

Thomas, 58, has a medical history of high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and obstructive sleep apnea. He was admitted to HCA Northwest Hospital after being found unresponsive at home. When paramedics arrived, he was hypotensive, hypoxemic, and had a heart rate in the 200s. He was intubated for airway protection and later required both a tracheostomy and a PEG tube for ongoing respiratory and nutritional support.

During his hospital stay, Thomas developed right lower lobe pneumonia, likely due to aspiration, and was treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics. Once his condition stabilized, he was transferred to Kindred Hospital Houston Northwest for continued medical and rehabilitative care.

When Thomas arrived, he was ventilator-dependent and required maximum assistance with bed mobility and rolling. He was unable to tolerate sitting for long periods because of fatigue. In occupational therapy, he needed minimal help with grooming but maximum assistance for dressing and toileting. Respiratory therapy noted that he had copious secretions and required ongoing ventilator support.

With time, dedication, and the support of his care team, Thomas began to make remarkable progress. Respiratory therapy interventions helped him successfully wean from the ventilator, transitioning to just 3 liters of oxygen by nasal cannula while maintaining stable oxygen levels. His strength and endurance steadily improved through consistent participation in therapy sessions.

In physical therapy, Thomas advanced from needing maximum assistance to performing sit-to-stand movements with standby assistance using a rolling walker. He eventually was able to walk more than 200 feet with rest breaks and contact guard assistance. In occupational therapy, he worked to regain independence in daily activities. By discharge, he could put on his shorts with minimal help, complete oral and hand hygiene with modified independence, and perform upper-body strengthening exercises in the therapy gym.

Through perseverance, teamwork, and a strong commitment to recovery, Thomas regained significant independence and confidence. He was successfully discharged to an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility to continue his progress and further build on the strength he regained at Kindred Hospital.

Patients at Kindred Hospitals begin receiving gentle in-bed therapy as soon as they are able to, progressing to more advanced movements as they recover. Our physical therapists (PTs) help even the most complicated patients, including those on mechanical ventilation, get on their feet. We are grateful for all our PTs who help our patients take the next step in their recovery journeys.
