On October 22, 2025, the American Heart Association changed their guidelines on how to help a choking victim.

They are now recommending you give back slaps prior to giving abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver).

This takes us back around 40 years ago, which is what we used to do to help a choking victim.

Dr. Heimlich is probably rolling over in his grave!

Have you asked your child’s school if they have an AED?

In Texas, AEDs are required to be in schools but not all states have this requirement.

Around 23,000 kids and teens who suffer a cardiac arrest this year and most will need the use of an AED in order to survive.

Be sure to ask your school if they have an AED that is in working order and a team that knows how to use it !

If you’ve ever been in one of my CPR classes, you know I like to keep things engaging. I believe learning should hands-on and even a little fun. We practice with manikins, get moving, and talk through real life scenarios.

This World Health Day, I encourage you to take a small but powerful step: sign up for a CPR AED First Aid course. If you’ve taken one before, sign up to take it again. Or better yet, bring a friend. The more people who learn, the safer and stronger our communities become.

That’s why in honor of World Health Day, I’ve provided tips on keeping your skills up to date. Check out my blog here: https://www.cprandsafetylady.com/post/world-health-day-why-cpr-and-first-aid-training-matter-more-than-ever
