In May, we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month to shine a light on the importance of mental health support. 1 in 5 people in the US suffer from mental illness at some point in their lives. It’s important to remember that mental health is health.

The theme of this year's Mental Health Awareness Month is "Turning Silence Into Connection", or the idea that when we share our lived experiences with each other, we challenge the stigma that prevents people from getting help. Stigma grows in silence. Healing begins in community.

This month, think about how you can share your story with someone else, rather than stay silent. We all have mental health, so we all have a story to share, and your story can make a real difference to someone. Even just realizing that they're not alone in their struggle can be life-changing.

Mental health is impacted by a lot of factors, including socioeconomic status and access to support. While we all have mental health, we’re not always taught about what we can do to support our mental health when times are hard. Working with a mental health professional can help you develop a plan to cope when things get tough.

Finding a therapist that works for you in any capacity can be tricky because therapy is so personal. If you’re looking for a therapist for a specific issue like trauma, there are even more factors to consider. Some of the things to consider are the training and experience of the therapist, the approach they would use during therapy, and your overall level of comfort with the person providing therapy.

Remember, finding a trauma therapist that is the right fit for you is not a foolproof process, and it may require some trial and error. Keep these tips in mind if you're looking for a trauma therapist: https://www.griefrecoveryhouston.com/how-to-find-a-trauma-therapist/

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

According to the EMDR Institute, it is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed “to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories,” negative memories, and helps to improve mental health.

For folks in the Houston area who need mental health support, an EMDR therapist can make a big difference in quality of life. These are just some of the reasons why!

EMDR is an evidence-based approach to healing from distressing experiences, like trauma, eating disorders, panic disorders, and more. The process involves revisiting disturbing memories, reprocessing trauma so it is no longer stuck, and replacing the distress with a positive thought instead.

Not only is EMDR evidence based, it has the benefit of working more quickly than traditional therapy in many cases. What might take months or years to cover in traditional therapy can be covered in a fraction of the time with EMDR because of the way treatment is structured and the healing that takes place.

Working with a Black therapist offers many benefits, particularly in a diverse city like Houston. A shared cultural background and lived experiences often create an instant connection and understanding between therapist and client.

Our Black therapists proudly serve the broader BIPOC community. They are deeply familiar with racial challenges and systemic inequalities, which allows clients to feel seen, heard, and validated without the added burden of explaining their cultural context. They bring a unique lens to addressing mental health within Black and BIPOC communities, tailoring care with cultural, historical, and sociopolitical awareness.

This connection fosters greater trust, emotional safety, and openness in therapy. It invites honest dialogue, encourages vulnerability, and supports deep healing through culturally attuned communication and compassion.
