At the Krist Irlen Clinic (Houston/Galveston) we always check what things have improved since wearing the Irlen glasses. We are often startled by the replies. Rachel is 14 years old and the first thing she said was that she could ‘see the world’. Sounds strange? Well not when you know that without her Irlen color not only do words move on the page, but her whole environment is in motion. Now things are stable: she no longer gets motion sickness, has gone up 2 grade levels in reading this year, and has got straight A’s in French (even spelling). Brilliant progress Rachel!

Do you prefer to memorize music rather than sight read? Is it difficult to see where the notes are positioned? You may have a visual processing difficulty called Irlen Syndrome that can be helped by wearing a specific color in glasses to filter the light.

Juliana is 18 years old and studying voice and piano at collage. She came to the Krist Irlen Clinic (Houston/Galveston) specifically for help reading music. In the video she explains what was happening and how the colored filter helped her.

Are you sensitive to particular types of light? Is it sometimes indoor light that bothers you?

Jerie is 79 years old and has been battling with bright lights, in particular bare fluorescent tubes, LEDs or lights where the filament is exposed. Indeed, her eyes often water and she can feel pain all over her body when looking at them. She travelled 300 miles to see Julie Yaxley, Clinic Director at the Houston/Galveston Irlen Center. She was tested under bright lights at the Center to find a color that she found ‘calming’. As she’d travelled so far it was easy to decide to ‘go the extra mile’ for her and she called on the evening so the Irlen color could be tested at two venues where she found the light she hated. Not sure what the Dollar Store and the Restaurant thought about their visitors!

Anita is a lawyer and recently came for a recheck of her Irlen color. Even though she had a new bifocal prescription, without adding her Irlen color, she couldn’t read the whole chart and editing dense legal documents was challenging. So if you are finding you can’t get your eye glasses prescription correct, please consider whether you also might be experiencing a visual processing difficulty!
