You are not defined by your eating disorder.

Not by a number.
Not by a meal.
Not by a thought.

Your worth is inherent and unchanging.

If you’re navigating disordered eating, please know this: healing is possible. Recovery starts with one brave step — and we are here to support you every step of the way. 🤍

It’s National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, and we want to shine a light on the often unseen impact these disorders have on so many lives.

An eating disorder doesn’t always show on the outside. Just because someone may not “look” like they’re struggling doesn’t mean they aren’t fighting a silent battle. Behind the scenes, eating disorders affect not only someone’s relationship with food but their mental and emotional well-being as well. 🧠

Body image is a deeply personal topic. Comments about someone’s appearance—even well-meaning ones—can unintentionally cause harm. We all have the power to support others through kindness, understanding, and open, non-judgmental conversations.

Eating disorders affect people of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. Anyone can struggle, regardless of how they appear on the outside. Let’s stand together to end the stigma and create safe spaces for help and healing. 🤍

With care and kindness,
Heights Family Counseling

This happens because your body is releasing all the emotional tension you used to suppress in order to survive.

When you’re in survival mode, you store. 📦
When you feel safe, you process. 🧠

You learned how to survive. Maybe by avoiding it. Maybe by pushing it down. And those tools helped you get through.

But survival isn’t the same as healing.

In trauma therapy, we don’t open everything at once. We take one memory at a time — at your pace — creating space for joy, peace, and new experiences.

There is room for joy again. And you don’t have to do this alone. 🤍

This Black History Awareness Month, we’re honoring the voices, stories, and clinical wisdom of Black authors who have shaped conversations around healing, identity, trauma, relationships, and resilience. 🤎📚

Many of our therapists have personally read these books and thoughtfully recommend them to clients. Representation matters — and so does access to diverse perspectives in mental health.

Whether you’re exploring racial identity, generational trauma, boundaries, faith, relationships, or personal growth, there is power in learning from voices who have lived it, studied it, and written about it.

Starting therapy can feel scary.
But behind the credentials are real humans who care deeply.

We’re not scary.
We’re real people — with degrees and coping skills.
You’re safe here. 🤍

Feeling overwhelmed isn’t a personal failure, it’s a nervous system under stress.

Nearly 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, and many report chronic overwhelm and anxiety.

Therapy helps you:
• Identify what’s actually yours to carry
• Develop coping tools
• Create clarity in the chaos

Like untangling yarn… one strand at a time. 🧶

Happy International Play Therapy Week! 🎨

Play is how children make sense of their world. It’s how they express what they can’t say, work through what they don’t understand, and heal from what hurts. Play therapy gives kids the tools to communicate, process, and thrive.

This week, we celebrate the power of play and the incredible work play therapists do every day. 🤍

Meet Justyn Smith, PhD, LPC-S. 👋

Dr. Justyn Smith is a compassionate and down-to-earth therapist who helps adults navigate anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, career pressure, and the overwhelm that often comes with “adulting.” He creates a supportive, non-judgmental space where clients can slow down, gain clarity, and reconnect with themselves. Dr. Justyn Smith believes therapy should feel like a true partnership—one grounded in trust, authenticity, and even moments of lightness and laughter. ✨

Drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Person-Centered Therapy, he tailors his approach to each client through a multicultural and strengths-based lens. He has a particular passion for supporting Gay Black Men, LGBTQ+ individuals, and high-achieving professionals—especially lawyers—who are managing the weight of multiple identities, expectations, and high-stakes environments. His work focuses on building self-awareness, self-compassion, and balance beyond titles and productivity.

With over 10 years of clinical experience across community health, psychiatric hospitals, non-profits, and university counseling centers, he brings both expertise and warmth into the therapy room. Outside of work, he enjoys trying new brunch spots, staying active with tennis and cycling, and unwinding with a good binge-worthy show. 🎾
