Toni Morrison reminded us that caring for ourselves is not selfish—it is necessary. In her wisdom, she called us back to ourselves, urging us to remember that our wholeness is not a luxury but a birthright—it’s sacred. Tricia Hersey’s sentiments would describe tending to our wholeness as an act of resistance against systems that benefit from our exhaustion. It’s a practice of remembrance: of who we are outside of survival, outside of productivity, and outside of others’ expectations.
On this World Mental Health Day, let us honor self-love as community care.
