The Children's Assessment Center - Houston-Harris County

The Children's Assessment Center - Houston-Harris County Our goal is to promote the complete healing of child victims of sexual abuse and their families.

The mission of The Children's Assessment Center is to provide a professional, compassionate and coordinated approach to the treatment of sexually abused children and their families, and to serve as an advocate for all children in our community. The Children's Assessment Center (The CAC Houston) provides a safe haven to sexually abused children and their families; a place where they can receive the

kind of care and treatment they so richly deserve. We are the Children's Advocacy Center for Houston/Harris County and we employ an extraordinarily effective multidisciplinary team approach in the prevention, assessment, investigation, referral for prosecution and treatment of child sexual abuse. Our mission is to provide a professional, compassionate and coordinated approach to the treatment of sexually abused children and their families, and to serve as an advocate for all children in our community. The CAC Houston is an accredited member of the National Children's Alliance, part of a national movement to create child-friendly intervention systems for sexually abused children, and a member of the Children's Advocacy Centers of Texas. We are also one of the largest child sexual abuse advocacy centers of its kind in the nation. As a collaborative public/private partnership of Harris County Commissioners Court and The Children’s Assessment Center Foundation, The CAC Houston represents a true partnership of the public and private sectors joining to provide the most effective service delivery to children and families.

Confirmed child abuse cases only tell part of the story. Many children experience harm that leaves no bruises, only lasting emotional and psychological wounds.

Healing is possible, but it starts with recognition.

At The Children’s Assessment Center, the Activity Center is where kids can simply be kids. We prioritize providing a sense of routine and joy. Whether it’s playing games, engaging in creative activities, or just enjoying a snack, this space is designed to offer comfort and a much-needed break from the weight of their experiences.

By creating an environment filled with play and positive interaction, we help restore a sense of safety and childhood for every young survivor who walks through our doors. It’s more than just fun and games. It is a critical part of the healing process.

An estimated 15% of children experience abuse or neglect before the age of 18. Because many cases go underreported, the real number is likely even higher.

This Child Abuse Prevention Month, The Children’s Assessment Center is encouraging our community to learn the warning signs and understand the power of early reporting. From law enforcement to medical professionals, we work across Harris County to support families, but protection starts with a vigilant public.

Kerry McCracken, Executive Director of The Children’s Assessment Center, recently spoke at our Child Abuse Prevention Month press conference to address a reality we cannot ignore: the staggering number of children in Harris County who experience abuse and neglect.

Nationally, 15% of children experience abuse or neglect before the age of 18. In a community as large as ours, that statistic represents thousands of young lives in need of protection, justice, and a path to healing.

As they spin in the wind throughout National Child Abuse Prevention Month, they represent the resilience of the young survivors we serve and our commitment to a future where every childhood is safe and happy. Thank you for helping us bring this symbol of hope to life.
