San José Clinic

San José Clinic is the original safety-net clinic in Houston. It is a critical part of the healthcare safety net in Greater Houston.

San José Clinic's mission is to provide healing through quality healthcare and education with respect and compassion for those with limited access to care. Serving those who are uninsured and uninsurable, the Clinic is a leading provider of quality primary, specialty, behavioral, dental, and pharmacy services for individuals and families who struggle the most with accessing care. Responding to the rising rate of infant mortality in the Mexican community of Houston, in 1922, Monsignor George T. Walsh appealed to the Charity Guild of Catholic Women to establish a free clinic to serve the health needs of the poor. From humble beginnings, San José Clinic has grown into a health home for thousands of Houstonians in need. One hundred-one years later, it proudly upholds the legacy of its founders by continuing to provide healthcare for those who need it most. San José Clinic is a 501(c)(3), a United Way partner, a Texas Medical Center institution, and a ministry of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

St. Joseph is the Patron saint of workers. He is the role model and inspiration of our Clinic, and our Mission. His spirit and Virtues of humility, righteousness, and faith are reflected in the work of San Jose Clinic through our compassionate care for the community.

Volunteers play a vital role in nonprofit organizations, allowing more resources to be directed toward the programs that serve our communities.

At San José Clinic, volunteers are essential to our mission. From our very beginning, SJC has relied on a volunteer-driven model to care for our patients. Today, Dr. Cardenas exemplifies this commitment by providing compassionate care to our patients while also mentoring future pediatric dentists, helping them develop both technical skills and a deeper understanding of how to serve community members who face barriers to accessing dental healthcare.

We are truly grateful for dedicated volunteers like Dr. Cardenas and for committed community partners such as UT Health-School of Dentistry .

Today's Woman of the Day is Julie 💜

43 years and counting! We couldn't imagine San Jose Clinic without Ms. Julie. During her time here, she's been able to help countless people with her dental health. But also, she has been able to pass on to others her experience, knowledge, and commitment for our Mission.

Working with Norma is like working with family! She has dedicated 13 years of work to our clinic. In that time, she got to know our patients and pass on her knowledge to a new generation of pharmacy technicians; included her own daughter who is also part of San José Clinic's pharmacy team.

Abby celebrated her two-anniversary of being part of the San Jose Clinic team this last January.
As a medical scheduler, she's one of the main points of communications with our patients. She treats every patient as if they were family, making sure they understand what the next steps will be.

Our Story

San José Clinic provides a beautiful, caring place for those in need to afford quality comprehensive healthcare. Our work includes medical, dental, pharmacy, and specialty services for low-income, uninsured individuals. Our mission is to provide quality healthcare and education to those with limited access to such services in an environment which respects the dignity of each person.

San José Clinic began with the vision of Monsignor Walsh, a donation of $50 from the Charity Guild of Catholic Women and volunteers from the community, who all came together with the same hope of breaking down barriers to healthcare for the underserved. Ninety-five years later, we continue to proudly uphold the legacy of our founders by continuing to provide healthcare for those who need a health home the most.

San José Clinic is a ministry of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, an agency of the United Way of Greater Houston, and an institution of the Texas Medical Center.
