The Montrose Center was founded in 1978 as Montrose Counseling Center to address the gap in accessible and affirming mental health services for gay men and lesbians. The Center was one of the first to respond to the emergence of HIV and AIDS in the 1980s and continues to provide HIV counseling, case management, housing, and emergency financial assistance to those living with HIV. Over the years, we have expanded our services to include intensive outpatient treatment for alcohol and substance use recovery, violence survivor services regarding domestic violence, sexual assault, hate crimes and human trafficking through our Anti-Violence Program, HIV/STI community health screenings, education and outreach, and programs designed specifically to meet the needs of youth and seniors. Our LGBT Switchboard 24-hour help line is also accessible 24-hours a day for crisis intervention, peer phone counseling, and information/referral. The Center regularly provides health education and disease prevention outreach to more than 40,000 individuals each year, and offers training to schools, corporations and healthcare professionals on these topics as well as general LGBTQ+ diversity issues. Over the last 40+ years, the Montrose Center has become Houston's hub for the LGBTQ+ community, regularly organizing events and programing in our first floor community center. With everything from free wellness and educational classes to meetings and events hosted by dozens of other social, civic and nonprofit groups, there is literally something for everyone happening at the Center nearly every day

The Center is an affiliated agency of United Way of Greater Houston and accredited by The Joint Commission in behavioral health. It became the first Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) in Texas and remains the only CCBHC in the nation with a focus on LGBTQ+ individuals and people living with HIV. We have an Institutional Review Board [IRB] that must approve any and all surveys conducted through the Montrose Center and its electronic outlets (website, social media, email, etc.). Please contact Rick Musquiz at 713.529.0037 or rmusquiz@montrosecenter.org. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are thrilled that you are part of the political process and a registered voter, but any partisan political comments will be removed.

This February, as you prepare for Valentine’s, Galentine’s, Palentine’s, or any celebration of love, we invite you to remember: love should never hurt. Consent is essential and it can be withdrawn at any time.

We're here for LGBTQ+ survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, hate crimes, and human trafficking. With folks who understand what it takes to rebuild. We offer counseling, advocacy, and a space where you can talk without fear of judgment as you find your way forward.

Healing looks different for everyone. We're here for you.

The world is better because you're in it.

Watching artists celebrate q***r joy and visibility at the Grammys reminded us why we do what we do. Don't ever be afraid to be who you are. Love who you love. Be proud of it. That's what the Montrose Center has been about since 1978, creating space where Houston's LGBTQ+ community can just exist, thrive, and be celebrated.

Life at Law Harrington looks like birthday parties in the diner where residents gather to celebrate each other. Second Servings pop-up markets where tables overflow with fresh food. Dance classes in the fitness center where seniors step, sway, and laugh while learning new moves. This is what community looks like when we all show up for each other.

Check out our recent post for this month's event lineup.

All programs and services at Law Harrington, including the diner, are open to seniors 60+.

This Black History Month, we remember that Black q***r leaders built the foundation we stand on today. Figures like Marsha P. Johnson, Audre Lorde, and Bayard Rustin didn't just fight for equality, they showed us what liberation looked like when we come together.

Their courage, their vision, and their love created pathways for all of us. Black LGBTQ+ voices have always led the way in movements for justice, resilience, and community.

At the Montrose Center, we carry their legacy forward while building a future where everyone can thrive. This month and always, we honor Black q***r excellence 🌈

January was about showing up and connecting!
We kicked off 2026 by building partnerships across Houston.

✨ Re-Entry, Restoration, and Rehabilitation Conference – We attended this conference at the Stringfellow unit alongside our partners at Cross Walk Center, connecting with 60+ attendees and organizations doing crucial re-entry work.

✨ Severance LGBTQ Sober Living Open House – We joined this open house to share resources and connect with folks creating safe recovery spaces for the LGBTQ+ community.

✨ United Against Human Trafficking Coalition Recognition – The City of Houston formally recognized the coalition for its work combating trafficking and supporting survivors. We're proud to be part of this effort.

Grateful for these partnerships and ready for what's ahead, Houston! 🌈

🌟 Employee of the Month: Mark Brockman, Finance Specialist

Mark keeps the wheels turning at the Montrose Center, managing the financial operations that support every program and service. He handles accounts payable, payroll, month-end closing tasks, and special projects like audit preparation.

Each month, Mark processes approximately 50 vendor invoices and issues nearly 200 client assistance payments each month for rent and utilities, with an average turnaround time of just 3 business days. His efficiency ensures that clients receive the support they need when they need it.

Mark, your precision and reliability make everything we do possible. Thank you for the care and dedication you bring to your work every day!

Our LGBT Switchboard 24-hour help line is accessible 24-hours for crisis intervention, peer phone counseling, and information/referral. The Center provides health education and disease prevention outreach to more than 40,000 individuals each year, and offers training to schools, corporations and healthcare professionals on these topics as well as general LGBT and diversity issues.
