October is ADHD Awareness Month!
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurological disorder that can cause emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and inattentiveness in both children and adults of all ages.

ADHD can have a wonderful positive side. People tend to shine in times of crisis, they can be good at making connections, and can be very fast learners!

Expanding Your Emotional Vocabulary: A Key Skill in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Have you ever felt “bad” but struggled to pinpoint exactly what that means? Emotions can be complex, and putting precise words to them is a decisive step toward understanding and managing them.

This visual tool isn’t just a fun list; it’s rooted in practical psychology. In Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan, one of the core modules is Emotion Regulation. A foundational skill here is “describing emotions,” which involves accurately naming what you’re feeling.

Why? Labelling emotions reduces their intensity (a concept backed by neuroscience, think of it as turning a vague storm into a navigable map). For instance, instead of saying “I’m mad,” try “I’m feeling irritated and jealous.” This precision helps you identify triggers, validate your experience, and choose effective coping strategies.

DBT emphasises mindfulness in observing emotions without judgment. Next time you’re overwhelmed, pause, reference a tool like this, and ask: What colour matches my mood? What word fits best? Over time, this builds emotional resilience, especially for those dealing with intense feelings in conditions like borderline personality disorder, anxiety, or depression, where DBT is often.
