For the last week of OT Month, we are bringing all the activities and skill areas of the month together by thinking about motor planning & praxis in action 🚀✨

These activities integrate core stability, bilateral coordination, and fine motor precision into multi-step, purposeful play. Kids practice sequencing, problem-solving, and emotional regulation while building resilience through trial-and-error and shared success 🤝💡

🗺️ Life Skills Scavenger Hunt: Children follow a visual map to find hidden everyday items and complete tasks like zipping, unlocking, or inserting coins—strengthening sequencing, planning, and functional hand skills.

🎨 Collaborative Vertical Mural: Working on a higher surface, kids build a shared scene using heavier materials, promoting core strength, shoulder stability, and coordinated teamwork.

🕵️ Secret Agent Mission: A multi-step obstacle course has children navigating “lasers,” crawling, and using tools to unlock a treasure—targeting motor planning, problem-solving, and task completion.

📦 Cardboard “Community” Build: Kids construct and decorate a large structure using boxes, tape, and markers, combining big body movements with detailed fine motor work and collaboration.

🏃 Life Skills Relay: Children move through a pathway to reach stations where they complete tasks like buttoning, zipping, or sorting—integrating movement, coordination, and functional skills.

🚀 Grand Finale: Rocket Launch Celebration: Kids sequence and complete the final steps of a rocket launch while managing anticipation and excitement, building regulation and confidence.

There are so many ways to promote fine motor skill development, we have another post full of ideas!

🎨 Tape Rescue Mission: Favorite toys are taped down and kiddos use their fingers to peel, pull, and “rescue” them—building finger isolation, pincer grasp, and persistence.

🥣 “Cheerio” or Pasta Drop: Children pick up small items like Cheerios, pasta, or pom-poms and drop them into a bottle, strengthening hand-eye coordination and controlled release.

🎨 Squeezable “Sponge Art”: Kids squeeze soft, wet sponges over paper or containers to create art while improving grip strength and hand muscles.

🧁 Texture “Poke-It” Trays: Sensory-filled trays hide treasures that children find by poking with their fingers, encouraging tactile exploration and finger isolation.

🎁 Vertical Bubble Popping: Bubble wrap on the wall invites kids to pop bubbles using fingers or hands, promoting wrist extension and strengthening with fun sensory feedback.

For the third week of OT Month, we’re thinking about how to promote fine motor skills through fun and meaningful play interactions. There’s plenty of ways to build these skills at home.

⛳ Mini “Hole in One” Golf Construction: Kids build a miniature golf course using boxes, tape, scissors, and markers—cutting holes, creating obstacles, and playing to strengthen precision and coordination.

💛 Friendship Bracelets: Children place and glue small colorful pieces together to create a collaborative design, promoting hand control, accuracy, and teamwork.

🖼️ Contact Paper Wall Mural: A sticky wall invites kids to place paper, yarn, and ribbons using hands or tools, encouraging fine motor control and creative exploration.

🚀 Baking Soda & Vinegar Rocket: Kiddos design and build rockets with stickers and materials while practicing sequencing, planning, and fine motor skills.

🌀 Oobleck Monster Creation: Kids mix, explore, and dig through oobleck using tools to find hidden objects, building dexterity through sensory messy play.

This week for OT Month, we’re thinking about how to promote midline crossing and body coordination through meaningful play activities. Here are some fun, purposeful activities you can use at home to support these skills!

✨ Collaborative Mirror Mimicry: Partners stand face-to-face and copy each other’s movements—even tricky asymmetrical ones like reaching across the body. Great for coordination and shared attention.

🥁 Bilateral Rhythm Band: Using two drumsticks, kids follow a beat while crossing midline to hit drums on opposite sides—combining rhythm, listening, and movement planning.

🎈 Parachute Teamwork: Working together to keep a ball or balloon from falling off a parachute builds cooperation, timing, and coordinated upper body movement.

🧲 Giant Magnet Drag: Using both hands to guide a magnetic wand and move a heavy object creates resistance and feedback while strengthening shoulders and coordination.

🍕 Pool Noodle “Pizza”: Sliding noodle “donuts” onto a vertical stick encourages midline crossing and symmetrical reaching—no fine motor grasp required!

Comprehensive Pediatric Services - All Under One Roof!

Family First Speech Therapy and Kids Connect Occupational Therapy, founded in 2014, have merged their practices to bring you SPACE Therapy & Gym. SPACE stands for Social Play and Creative Education and is a comprehensive therapeutic clinic. Our mission is to serve busy families by offering a unique SPACE and quality services - all under one roof.

SPACE provides the most up to date and innovative treatments in speech therapy, occupational therapy, feeding therapy, applied behavior analysis and DIR® /Floortime™ therapy. It will be the only facility in the greater Houston area that will provide their beloved DIR® / Floortime™ Model, while also offering what some physicians consider to be the gold standard treatment of autism, which is applied behavior analysis (ABA).

SPACE Therapy & Gym is still taking new clients at their current location: 805 Rhode Place, Suite 350 Houston, TX 77019.
