February is National Cancer Prevention Month — and prevention starts with knowledge and action. 💜

Many cancers affecting women can be prevented or detected early through routine screening and lifestyle awareness. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Cancer Society, regular visits with your OB-GYN play a critical role in identifying risks early and improving outcomes.

Here’s what proactive care looks like:

✔️ Pap tests & HPV testing to screen for cervical cancer
✔️ HPV vaccination to significantly reduce cervical cancer risk
✔️ Clinical breast exams & mammogram referrals based on age and risk
✔️ Genetic risk assessment if you have a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer
✔️ Guidance on modifiable risk factors such as smoking cessation, weight management, and physical activity

Early detection saves lives. Screening allows us to identify changes before symptoms appear — when treatment is most effective.

If you are unsure whether you’re up to date on your screenings, this is the time to ask.

Schedule your wellness exam with LUNA OBGYN Houston and take a proactive step toward protecting your health.

Your hormones need fuel — not restriction.

Your menstrual cycle is regulated by a delicate hormonal system that depends on proper nutrition. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, adequate nutrition plays an important role in reproductive health.

Extremely low-fat diets, chronic under-eating, or diets high in processed sugars can disrupt ovulation and menstrual regularity. When the body senses it’s not getting enough energy, it may suppress ovulation — a condition known clinically as functional hypothalamic amenorrhea.

Balanced nutrition supports:
✔️ Regular ovulation
✔️ Healthy estrogen and progesterone levels
✔️ Bone protection
✔️ Fertility and long-term reproductive health

A hormone-supportive plate includes:
• Lean protein
• Healthy fats (like olive oil, nuts, salmon)
• Fiber-rich carbohydrates
• Consistent meals throughout the day

If you’re experiencing irregular cycles, missed periods, or fertility concerns, your nutrition and overall metabolic health may be part of the conversation.

Estrogen does more than regulate your menstrual cycle — it plays a critical role in protecting your bones.

Estrogen helps maintain the balance between bone breakdown and bone rebuilding. When estrogen levels decline during menopause, bone resorption (breakdown) happens faster than bone formation. Over time, this can lead to decreased bone density and increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

According to the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH):

• Bone loss can begin during perimenopause
• Women can lose up to 20% of their bone density in the 5–7 years after menopause
• Osteoporosis often has no symptoms until a fracture occurs

Bone health is not just about aging — it’s about proactive care.

At LUNA OBGYN Houston, we evaluate risk factors, discuss hormone changes, and guide patients on evidence-based prevention strategies including nutrition, weight-bearing exercise, screening, and when appropriate, medical therapy.

Noticing thinner lashes lately?

Your lashes follow the same hormonal hair growth cycle as the hair on your scalp — and shifts in estrogen can absolutely affect them.

✔ During pregnancy, higher estrogen levels can prolong the growth phase of hair.
✔ After delivery, the drop in estrogen can trigger increased shedding (including lashes).
✔ During perimenopause and menopause, fluctuating and declining estrogen may contribute to hair thinning.

These hormone-related hair cycle changes are well documented by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and supported in endocrine literature.

Thyroid disorders are another common cause. Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can affect hair growth patterns — including thinning of the outer third of the eyebrows and lash loss — as recognized by the **American Thyroid Association.

If you’re experiencing:
• Sudden lash shedding
• Noticeable thinning
• Hair changes along with fatigue, weight shifts, or cycle changes

It may be more than cosmetic.

Hormonal changes deserve real evaluation — not guesswork.

🎉 Fun Fact Friday: Small Condom Mistakes Can Reduce Protection

When used correctly, condoms are highly effective at preventing pregnancy and reducing the risk of s*xually transmitted infections. But small mistakes can lower that protection.

Here are 5 common condom mistakes we see:

✔️ Not checking the expiration date
✔️ Using oil-based lubricants with latex condoms (can cause breakage)
✔️ Not leaving space at the tip
✔️ Putting it on too late
✔️ Reusing a condom (they are single-use only)

According to the CDC, correct and consistent use is key to effectiveness.

Sexual health is part of your overall wellness — and you deserve clear, judgment-free guidance.

Many moms ask us:

“When should my daughter see an OB-GYN for the first time?”

According to ACOG, the first visit should happen between ages 13–15 — and it’s usually just a conversation, not an exam.

We talk about periods, body changes, and answer questions in a respectful, private setting. Early visits build confidence and healthy habits for life.

If you’re in the Memorial or Memorial City area, we’re here to make that first visit comfortable and reassuring.

Routine GYN Visits Play a Critical Role in Cancer Prevention

Your annual OB-GYN visit is about much more than a routine exam—it’s one of the most important tools we have for early detection and cancer prevention.

During preventive visits, OB-GYNs assess more than Pap tests alone. We evaluate changes in symptoms, menstrual patterns, pelvic health, breast health, family history, and overall risk factors that may signal concerns long before cancer develops. Many gynecologic cancers are most treatable when identified early—and those early warning signs are often subtle.

Preventive care isn’t just for when something feels wrong. It’s for protecting your health before problems start.

On World Cancer Day, we want to remind women that staying consistent with routine gynecologic care can make a meaningful difference in long-term health outcomes.

Choosing an OB-GYN is deeply personal — especially when you’re trusting someone with your pregnancy and your health.

One of our patients shared how, from the very first visit, she felt genuinely known and cared for. Not just by her doctor, but by every person she interacted with — from the front office team to the nurses and PAs. She wasn’t treated like a number. She was treated like a person.

When it came time to deliver her baby, that trust was reaffirmed in the most powerful way — hospital nurses told her that her OB-GYN was the one they personally choose for themselves. For her, that meant confidence, peace of mind, and knowing she was in the best possible hands.

At LUNA OBGYN Houston, we believe excellent care starts with listening, compassion, and building real relationships — because you deserve nothing less.

If you’re looking for an OB-GYN in the Memorial / Memorial City area who truly takes the time to know you, we’re here when you’re ready.
