Few things could be more frustrating than gaining weight after a weight loss surgery. The sleeve gastrectomy seems a little more prone to this issue. Let’s review some of the reasons that I see people regain weight after a sleeve gastrectomy.
1) Eating too frequently or snacking too much. The sleeve is designed to limit how much you eat at one sitting, but if you constantly take in food throughout the day, you will beat the sleeve.
2) Eating too much junk food, or simply just not enough fiber. In fact, I’ve seen people think that they need a lot of protein and therefore overheat high calorie foods while under eating high fiber foods that help keep you full.
3) just not exercising enough. With rapid weight loss, you can lose lean muscle and slow metabolism. It is vital to, at a minimum, get enough steps in the day, but also build muscle and do cardio exercise.
4) the pouch of the sleeve may have been made to large, or the upper stretchy part of the pouch may have been left, or the pouch just may have stretched overtime.
5) hunger may be returning. The dropping Grehlin hormone can help with satiation in the beginning, but overtime other hunger hormones can start to affect the hypothalamus and caused dysfunctional eating. I have also seen people get severe reflux after a sleeve, and often times they will take extra calories simply, whether they know it or not, to try and take away the sensation of reflux.
It can be frustrating to gain weight after a weight loss surgery, but it can be treated. This may include lifestyle, changes, medications, and sometimes surgery.
