If you have uterine fibroids, you are probably familiar with the pattern.

Periods that are heavier and longer than they should be. Fatigue that does not lift the way it used to. Pelvic pressure or discomfort that comes and goes. Lower back pain. Needing to plan in ways that other women do not have to think about.

Many women manage these symptoms quietly for years. Some are eventually told that a hysterectomy is the most effective solution. A lot of them do not know there is a well-established alternative that has been available for over 25 years.

Dr. Bilal Anwer performs Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) at Leg Pain and Vascular Institute in Houston. As he puts it: "Too many women are still being told hysterectomy is their only choice when UFE has been proven effective for over 25 years."

UFE works by reducing the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink gradually and naturally. Your uterus is completely preserved. The procedure takes approximately 60 minutes, is performed under light sedation as an outpatient, and most patients return to normal activity within one to two weeks.

Most women notice a meaningful improvement in symptoms within their first cycle after treatment.

No general anesthesia. No hospital stay. No surgical removal of the uterus.
Covered by Medicare and most major insurance plans, including BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, and Humana. No referral needed.

Dr. Anwer reviews every patient's imaging personally at the first consultation. Consultations are thorough, unhurried, and focused entirely on your situation.

If you are looking for a specialist in Houston for vascular, joint, or pelvic conditions, we would like to introduce you to Dr. Bilal Anwer.

Dr. Anwer is a Stanford Fellowship trained, CAQ Board Certified Vascular and Interventional Radiologist with over 10 years of clinical experience treating patients across Greater Houston. He completed his Fellowship at Stanford Medicine and holds dual board certification in both Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, meaning he personally reads and interprets the imaging behind every treatment decision he makes. That level of diagnostic depth is not standard in the field.

He was named a Top Doctor by peer nomination from 2020 to 2025. Not an online rating. Other physicians were asked who they would send their own family to. His peers chose him five years running.

His patients agree.

Dr. Anwer sees patients at two Houston-area locations, FM 1960 and Webster. Consultations are thorough, unhurried, and focused on your specific situation. Most major insurance plans accepted, including Medicare. No referral needed.

If you have plantar fasciitis, you know the feeling. That sharp, stabbing pain in your heel the moment your foot hits the floor in the morning. You have learned to brace for it. Maybe you sit on the edge of the bed for a minute, stretch your foot, ease into it.

It gets a little better after you have been moving for a few minutes. Then it comes back after sitting, after standing too long, at the end of the day.

Most people with chronic heel pain have tried the stretching, the orthotics, the cortisone injections. The injections work for a while, then the pain comes back. That is not a coincidence. Cortisone reduces inflammation temporarily, but it cannot reach the abnormal blood vessels that grow into chronically inflamed heel tissue and keep the pain cycle running. That is why the relief never holds.

Plantar fascia embolization targets those vessels directly. A thin catheter enters through a pinhole in the wrist or ankle. X-ray guidance directs it to the small vessels feeding the inflamed tissue. Tiny particles reduce that abnormal blood flow. The procedure takes 30 minutes. You go home the same day. Most patients notice progressive improvement in heel pain within 2 to 4 weeks.

No surgical release. No general anesthesia. Back to normal activity in 24 to 48 hours.

Best suited for patients with heel pain lasting more than 3 to 6 months that has not responded to conservative treatment.

If you or someone you care for has a wound on the leg or foot that has been treated with dressings for weeks but is not closing, not improving, or slowly getting worse, this is important to read.

Wounds on the lower leg and foot that fail to heal are almost always a circulation problem. Without adequate blood flow, the body cannot deliver the oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells it needs to repair the tissue. No amount of dressing changes will fix that if the underlying vascular cause is not addressed.
This is especially common in patients with diabetes or peripheral arterial disease. And it is serious. A wound that is not progressing after four to six weeks of standard care carries a real risk of infection, tissue damage, and in advanced cases, amputation.

Dr. Bilal Anwer uses image-guided angioplasty to open the narrowed arteries supplying the wound area and restore the blood flow the body needs to heal. The procedure is performed through a pinhole in the wrist or groin. No open surgery, no general anesthesia, no bypass.

Restoring circulation is the most important step in wound care. It is also the one most often skipped.

If a wound is not healing, a vascular assessment with Dr. Anwer should be the next call, not the last resort.

Covered by Medicare and most major insurance plans.

No referral needed. Same-week appointments available.

If your legs feel heavy and achy by the afternoon, swell up toward the end of the day, or keep you up at night with cramps, you might have written it off as just being on your feet too much.

A lot of people do. But that pattern of symptoms is often a sign of venous disease, a condition where the valves inside your leg veins stop working properly, blood pools, and pressure builds. It is a medical condition, not just tired legs. And it gets worse over time if left untreated.

The good news is it is very treatable. Without surgery, without a hospital stay, and most of the time covered by insurance.

Not sure if what you are experiencing is venous disease? Use our Treatment Finder at legpainclinic.com/vein-disease to check your symptoms. It takes under 2 minutes, and if varicose veins or venous disease match what you are feeling, it connects you directly with Dr. Anwer's team.

Dr. Bilal Anwer treats venous disease at two Houston-area locations using image-guided techniques that close the diseased vein from the inside. No surgical incisions. Same-day recovery. Most patients are back to normal activity the same day.

If your legs ache or cramp when you walk and feel better after a few minutes of rest, pay attention to that pattern.

It has a name. Intermittent claudication. And it's one of the most common early signs of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). In this condition, plaque builds up inside the arteries supplying blood to your legs, reducing the flow your muscles need to keep moving.

Most people dismiss it as getting older. PAD is progressive. If left untreated, it doesn't just stay uncomfortable; it gets worse. It results in reduced walking distance. Cold or numb feet. Slow-healing wounds, and in advanced cases, serious tissue damage.

The good news: it's treatable. Without surgery
Dr. Bilal Anwer uses image-guided angioplasty to open the narrowed artery and restore healthy circulation as an outpatient procedure, with no bypass surgery, no hospital stay, and no long recovery.

โ†’ No surgical incisions
โ†’ Restores blood flow to the legs
โ†’ Back to normal activity in 1โ€“2 days
โ†’ Covered by Medicare and most major insurance plans

If those walking cramps sound familiar, don't write them off. A consultation with Dr. Anwer takes less than an hour and could change the trajectory of this completely.

Had cortisone injections for your shoulder and felt better for a few weeks, then right back to where you started?

That's not bad luck. It's how injections work. They reduce inflammation temporarily. What they can't do is reach the abnormal blood vessels that grow into chronically inflamed shoulder tissue and keep the pain cycle running. Which is exactly why the relief never lasts.

Shoulder embolization targets those vessels directly. Swipe to see how. โ†’

Most suitable for patients with frozen shoulder, adhesive capsulitis, or chronic rotator cuff pain who haven't found lasting relief from conservative treatment.

If climbing stairs hurts. If your knee is stiff every morning. If you've been told a knee replacement is your only real option - that's not the full picture.

Genicular Artery Embolization (G*E) is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces inflammation causing your knee pain, without surgery, a hospital stay, and without a long recovery.

Here's what it looks like:
โ†’ 45-minute outpatient procedure
โ†’ No general anaesthesia
โ†’ Same-day recovery
โ†’ Pain relief typically within 2โ€“4 weeks
โ†’ Covered by Medicare and most major insurance plans

Dr. Bilal Anwer is Stanford Fellowship trained and has been performing G*E in Houston for over 10 years. He reviews every patient's imaging personally before recommending any treatment.

If you've been putting this off because you don't want surgery, this is worth a conversation.

What you eat plays an important role in your vascular health, circulation, and joint function. During National Nutrition Month, itโ€™s a great reminder that healthy food choices can help reduce inflammation, improve blood flow, and support long-term mobility. Poor nutrition may contribute to vascular disease and chronic pain, but small lifestyle changes can make a big difference.
