Our next spotlight recognition belongs to Peter Bell, an early and powerful advocate for addressing the unique needs of African Americans within addiction treatment in the United States.

He co-founded the Institute on Black Chemical Abuse and served as its Executive Director for 15 years, helping shape culturally responsive approaches to prevention, treatment, and recovery.

Peter is also the author of influential works, including:

GREAT NEWS: We're expanding our access to care thanks to a Houston Methodist grant to support our Mental Health Care Access.

This funding will help us expand our impactful trauma-informed counseling services, making it easier for members of our community to get the care they need.

Amber Lotsi, Sr. Director of Clinical Services for Santa Maria Hostel, shares:

"Therapy provides structure, stability, and a foundation for long-term recovery. By strengthening both body and mind, therapy plays a key role in helping individuals build a healthier future beyond treatment."

✨Jacki McKinney, M.S.W.✨

Our next Spotlight belongs to Jacki Mckinney.

A survivor of trauma, addiction, homelessness, and the justice system, Jacki McKinney transformed lived experience into powerful advocacy. She was a founding member of the National People of Color Consumer/Survivor Network and a national voice on seclusion/restraint, intergenerational family support, and equity in public mental health.

Her leadership earned her the Clifford W. Beers Award and a SAMHSA Lifetime Achievement Voice Award.

Her legacy continues to inspire trauma-informed, people-centered change. ✨

As we celebrate 100 years of we are reflecting on the contributions to our history and future.

As the first Black woman to publish a recovery memoir, "I'm Black and I'm Sober," Chaney Allen opened doors - then built institutions to make sure others could walk through them. From training counselors to founding rehab and detox centers, her legacy continues to save lives.

Her legacy lives on in the women and communities she's uplifted. 🙌

Cory leads human capital strategy and leadership development and also serves as President of the Kodiak Cares Foundation, supporting community-focused philanthropic initiatives.

Cory has served on the Santa Maria Hostel Advisory Board for 2 years and has been involved with Santa Maria Hostel through The Kodiak Cares Foundation for 4 years in total. We’re grateful for her leadership, expertise, and continued commitment to our mission.
