This month, we’re celebrating the incredible impact OTs make every day as they help patients build skills, regain independence, and move forward with confidence.

We’re grateful for the role they play in supporting progress and purpose across every stage of care.

April is National Autism Awareness Month. For many families, awareness has never been the barrier. Finding the right level of care often is.

Children and adolescents with autism and complex medical or behavioral needs require coordinated, interdisciplinary support that extends beyond traditional settings. At Nexus, our teams work alongside caregivers and referral partners to provide structured environments designed for stability, progress, and thoughtful transition planning.

This month, we recognize the families still navigating limited options and reaffirm our commitment to care that meets complexity with clarity, clinical depth, and compassion.

At Nexus, healing happens through teamwork — and our physicians are at the heart of it. Their leadership and compassion set the standard for integrated, whole-person care.

To every doctor across our system: Thank you for all you do.

Happy National Doctor’s Day!

What does it look like when clinical programming extends beyond the unit?

At Nexus Children's Hospital – Dallas, our New Directions program now includes a dedicated therapeutic outdoor space, built with specialized adaptive equipment from Child's Play, Inc., where patients with IDD, autism, and other neurodevelopmental conditions can work on regulation, communication, and social skills in a safe, structured setting.

This space was designed with intentionality, because the environments we build for our patients matter as much as the programs we deliver inside them.

Madison came to Nexus Children's Hospital with severe autism and medical needs that most programs were not equipped to meet.

Through the New Directions Program, she built communication skills, formed meaningful connections, and transitioned to a more independent life closer to home.

Her mother Tabitha put it simply: "When we went to Nexus Children's Hospital, we knew she was in a good place and getting better every day."

That is the work the New Directions Program was developed to do. One patient at a time.

Hyperphagia is one of the most challenging aspects of Prader-Willi Syndrome. It is not simply overeating, but a biologically driven inability to feel full.

Developing routines and implementing environmental safety mechanisms are key to helping individuals with PWS feel secure in the availability of meals.

In the Jump Start Program, we help patients develop healthy routines, build sustainable skills, and prepare for the next appropriate level of care. Through structured support, clinical oversight, and close caregiver collaboration, our team works to create a foundation for long-term stability and improved quality of life.
If you are exploring care options for a child with Prader-Willi Syndrome, our admissions team is available to provide guidance and discuss whether Jump Start may be the right fit.

At Nexus Health Systems, we are powered by purpose. This means that everything we do is driven by our mission to transform lives through compassionate, integrated care.

Here, Patient Care Assistant Lauren Clark shares how it feels to witness a patient arrive in a wheelchair and discharge on foot.
It’s a powerful example of the way in which interdisciplinary collaboration and purpose-driven care can change the trajectory of a patient’s life.

Aggression can be one of the most difficult and isolating experiences some families face when caring for a child with autism, and it is also one of the most misunderstood.

In many cases, these behaviors are not about defiance. They’re a sign of overwhelm, unmet communication needs, anxiety, or even physical discomfort that cannot be easily expressed.

Understanding the “why” is where change begins.

In the New Directions Program, we optimize medications, equip patients with communication tools, and offer ABA-informed therapy led by BCBAs and RBTs to get to the root causes of challenging and unsafe behaviors.
