What Happens When You Dislocate Your Shoulder?

A dislocated shoulder can cause intense pain, and often occurs as the result of a traumatic injury like a fall or heavy blow to the shoulder, though they can also happen because of extreme muscle contractions like those that take place during seizures. Though shoulder dislocations can happen in many ways, the injury itself happens in the same way. When the shoulder becomes dislocated, the ball-shaped portion of your upper arm's joint, which fits into the shoulder blade socket, becomes dislodged from the socket. If you have a dislocated shoulder, the bone will need to be manipulated back into place by a doctor. To see Dr. Gombera about a dislocated shoulder or to discuss treatment options, call us at 713-714-1779 or schedule an appointment online today.

September is Yoga Awareness Month!

This Yoga Awareness Month is a great time to learn more about the benefits of yoga and how the right stretches and poses can help strengthen your shoulders to prevent injuries, or to heal an existing injury. One simple yoga-inspired move is the wall plank, which will help you keep your scapulae in the correct position and get the proper alignment for your rotator cuff and biceps tendons. To perform the wall plank, stand with your hands flat against the wall at shoulder height and pull your scapulae down your back by trying to move your hands downward. You can also further activate the shoulder muscles by trying to push the wall away from you, which will separate your shoulder blades.

Practice these four poses to heal an injury or strengthen your shoulders to prevent one.

Understanding Labrum Tears
(http://ow.ly/6uuf30ljhOy)

Labrum tears are a common shoulder injury characterized by a sharp popping sensation in the shoulder. The labrum itself is a type of cartilage within the shoulder joint, and it is more rigid than other types of cartilage in the same area. The labrum's job is to keep the joint in place by deepening the shoulder socket, and when it's working as it should, labrum cartilage is attached around the socket to the bone, and to the shoulder's ligaments. In the case of a shoulder injury that tears the ligaments, the labrum cartilage can be pulled off of the socket bone's rim, leaving the socket vulnerable to dislocation. If you think you may have a labrum tear or injury to the shoulder ligaments, schedule an appointment with Dr. Gombera online today.

This Simple Move Will Strengthen Your Shoulder Muscles
(http://ow.ly/VsJh30ljhOw)

Did you know that musculoskeletal conditions, including those impacting the shoulder, can limit activity for as many as one in two Americans? Help stabilize your shoulder blades and prevent injuries to rotator cuff muscles by trying out a basic strength training exercise, the wall slide. Begin by standing with your back to the wall and, without looking up, attempting to press the wall with your head and shoulder blades. Then, put your hands against the wall, or as close as you can get them, at shoulder level. Raise your arms slowly until the hands touch, while continuing to press against the wall. Lower your arms slowly, then repeat for one minute.

Biomechanics are the key.

Diabetes Raises Your Risk For Frozen Shoulder
(http://ow.ly/uszm30ljhOt)

Did you know that common conditions like diabetes and thyroid problems can put you at increased risk for frozen shoulder, which develops when connective tissue thickens, tightens around the joint and restricts movement? While this painful condition can often resolve on its own or with the help of a physical therapist, more severe cases might require steroid injections, shoulder manipulation or arthroscopic surgery. If you think you’re dealing with complications related to frozen shoulder, call us at 713-714-1779 or schedule an appointment online today.

Is Technology Causing Your Shoulder Pain?

We all know that spending too much time on electronic devices can lead to eye strain and disrupted sleep, but did you know it can also cause persistent pain in the neck and upper shoulders? Especially prevalent in women and young adults, “tablet neck” and the resulting shoulder strain are caused by poor posture while using these types of devices. It can be remedied by choosing a chair that allows for good back support, engaging in shoulder-strengthening exercises and placing the tablet on a stand.

New Parents, Is Your Stroller Hurting Your Shoulders?

As if late-night feedings and crying spells weren’t enough of a challenge for any new parent, pushing your baby’s stroller can also cause shoulder pain if you aren’t careful. Help prevent aches and injuries by keeping elbows close to your body while walking close to the stroller. You can also perform a neck release stretch three times a day to strengthen your muscles and, while you’re at it, squeeze in a much-needed mini-break. Using a baby carrier instead of a stroller? Be sure to balance the weight between your shoulders and hips.

Modifying Your Fitness Routine Can Prevent Frozen Shoulder
(http://ow.ly/grJN30ljhOn)

While working out regularly is a healthy habit, overuse of your shoulder muscles can lead to rotator cuff tendinitis and even frozen shoulder, in which pain and mobility issues worsen over time. Fortunately, treatment for frozen shoulder doesn’t always have to involve surgery. Physical therapy can bolster motion and reduce inflammation, and modifying your fitness routine can help avoid a recurrence after you’ve healed. Women ages 40 to 55 are especially susceptible to frozen shoulder, so it’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms when exercising.

Frozen Shoulder Is One Of The Most Common Causes Of Shoulder Pain
(http://ow.ly/SBKu30ljhOl)

Shoulder pain can impact your daily quality of life, but pinpointing the specific cause can be a challenge. One of five common shoulder ailments, frozen shoulder can create a feeling of an electric shock running down your arm, and is most common in individuals between the ages of 40 and 60. Patients suffering from frozen shoulder might, in certain severe cases, benefit from arthroscopic capsular release, where a pencil-sized instrument containing a camera and light enter the joint and remove tension from the shoulder capsule.

Is Shoulder Surgery The Solution To Your Pain?

We've all experienced shoulder stiffness and pain at some point, but how do you know when it represents a more serious problem? If you have persistent pain with only short pain-free periods, or increased pain following activities involving shoulder motion, it may be time to discuss options with Dr. Gombera. Though many shoulder issues can be treated with physical therapy, more serious issues can be identified through a surgical arthroscopic procedure, one of Dr. Gombera's specialties. By diagnosing problems like tendinitis and rotator cuff tears using a miniaturized camera, the problem can then be corrected through small incisions and corrective procedures. Think shoulder surgery may be the answer to your painful shoulder symptoms? Book a consultation online with Dr. Gombera today.
