Zion, who has cerebral palsy, became a candidate for SDR surgery at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital after years of therapy. The program is one of the few in the country offering this advanced procedure, which reduces the abdominal reflexes causing Zion’s muscle tightness. Just three months after surgery, he could stand on his own, and today, he even runs, jumps, and dances.

Jeren Hall’s smile lights up every room he enters. At 17 years old, he is nonverbal, autistic and lives with epilepsy. In 2023, Jeren fell and fractured his knee. During a follow-up visit with the pediatric orthopedic team affiliated with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, an X-ray of Jeren’s spine was taken that revealed neuromuscular scoliosis. The team explained that the scoliosis could eventually affect Jeren’s ability to walk and get up on his own.

“He can run and play. Even though he’s nonverbal, he’s very active. When I heard it might stop him from doing those things, I knew we had to get ahead of it,” his mother, Tracey, said.

This past weekend, the NICU team at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center welcomed former patients and their families for a fall festival in the Wolf Park and play area, just outside our Level III NICU and Family Life Center. Families enjoyed train rides, meeting Topper the Giraffe, painting mini pumpkins and playing carnival games.

A heartfelt thank you for all the families who joined us and for trusting us with the care of your most precious gift. 💚

When Courtney was 20 weeks pregnant with baby Dylan, she went in for an anatomy scan at her OB-GYN’s office in Shreveport, Louisiana. After performing tests, the Rays learned Dylan had spina bifida. Their doctor in Louisiana mentioned that there was a children’s hospital in Houston that takes an innovative approach to fetal surgery to repair spina bifida.

"My husband and I thought the fetal surgery route would be a good option for us to consider so, our doctor referred us to The Fetal Center at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital." said Courtney.
