NAMI Greater Houston

NAMI Greater Houston NAMI Greater Houston envisions a healing community where all persons affected by mental illness can experience resiliency on the road to wellness.

The mission of NAMI Greater Houston is to provide advocacy, education, support and public awareness so that all individuals and families affected by mental illness can build better lives. NAMI Greater Houston is challenging one of the greatest unmet needs in society: Mental Illness. One in five families in any given year is touched in some way with a serious mental illness. Mental illnesses are biological brain disorders. In fact, mental disorders together account for more than 15 percent of the overall burden of disease from all causes--even more than for all forms of cancer. While mental illnesses have an immense impact on individuals and families, less than half of those who suffer from these disorders seek care. The prevalence of stigma, shame and guilt are the most acknowledged reasons why many people suffer and are denied full participation in society. For many, mental illness is still a taboo topic, and is an illness that is treated as if it is unrelated to our physical well-being. Mental illness deserves the same compassion, understanding and access to treatment and support in the same manner that is given to other biological illnesses. At NAMI Greater Houston we support individuals living with mental illness and their families, and we advocate ensuring that they are treated respectfully and fairly. We envision a future where there is a well-funded community-based mental health system using proven quality treatments, and where people with mental illness are not heavily represented in the criminal justice system. We also envision a well-informed public that understands that we can change the face of mental illness through support, education and advocacy. At the heart of our efforts, we are the catalysts of change in our community and every step we take we strive to offer hope, reform and health to all Houstonians through support, education, and advocacy. We welcome you to our page and we hope that you will find the information and resources you desire, and that you will join forces with us as we stand for change! Learn More:

🧠 How to Advocate for Mental Health

One of the strongest ways to advocate is by using your voice.
When we speak openly about our own experiences—or the challenges faced by those we love—we break silence, push back against stigma, and remind others they’re not alone. 💙

✨ Your voice matters.
Start conversations. Share when you’re able. Encourage compassionate dialogue. Every word you choose can help build a more understanding, supportive community.

💛 Partner With Purpose. Give With Heart.

Alicia and her light will be sorely missed!

We are saddened to share the passing of Alicia Nancy Smith, a dedicated NAMI advocate whose commitment strengthened NAMI’s work and expanded understanding of mental health needs. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who are remembering her life.

Alicia’s leadership was recognized with NAMI Montana’s Hero Award and NAMI’s national Ken Steele Award, reflecting the meaningful difference she made. Through her advocacy, her connection to the NAMI community, and her extraordinarily generous estate gift supporting NAMI Montana and the NAMI Endowment, she helped ensure more people can find strength in community and know they are not alone.

We are grateful for her dedication and the lasting legacy she leaves within the NAMI community.

Being a family caregiver means showing up with strength, compassion, and resilience—even when it feels like you’re running on empty.
Caring for someone you love can bring joy, but it can also bring worry, hard decisions, and moments where you feel completely alone.

That’s why the NAMI Family Caregiver HelpLine exists.

Our specialists understand the challenges of supporting someone with a mental health condition—because many have lived it themselves. We’re here to help you navigate systems, find resources, push back against stigma, and remind you that you deserve support too.

If caregiving feels heavy, reaching out doesn’t have to.
You care for them. We care for you.
