NAMI Greater Houston

NAMI Greater Houston NAMI Greater Houston envisions a healing community where all persons affected by mental illness can experience resiliency on the road to wellness.

The mission of NAMI Greater Houston is to provide advocacy, education, support and public awareness so that all individuals and families affected by mental illness can build better lives. NAMI Greater Houston is challenging one of the greatest unmet needs in society: Mental Illness. One in five families in any given year is touched in some way with a serious mental illness. Mental illnesses are biological brain disorders. In fact, mental disorders together account for more than 15 percent of the overall burden of disease from all causes--even more than for all forms of cancer. While mental illnesses have an immense impact on individuals and families, less than half of those who suffer from these disorders seek care. The prevalence of stigma, shame and guilt are the most acknowledged reasons why many people suffer and are denied full participation in society. For many, mental illness is still a taboo topic, and is an illness that is treated as if it is unrelated to our physical well-being. Mental illness deserves the same compassion, understanding and access to treatment and support in the same manner that is given to other biological illnesses. At NAMI Greater Houston we support individuals living with mental illness and their families, and we advocate ensuring that they are treated respectfully and fairly. We envision a future where there is a well-funded community-based mental health system using proven quality treatments, and where people with mental illness are not heavily represented in the criminal justice system. We also envision a well-informed public that understands that we can change the face of mental illness through support, education and advocacy. At the heart of our efforts, we are the catalysts of change in our community and every step we take we strive to offer hope, reform and health to all Houstonians through support, education, and advocacy. We welcome you to our page and we hope that you will find the information and resources you desire, and that you will join forces with us as we stand for change! Learn More:

Happy International Women’s Day! 💜

We had a wonderful time attending the United Nations Association’s International Women’s Day celebration. It was an inspiring event filled with powerful stories, meaningful conversations, and a shared commitment to uplifting women in our communities.

Hearing the journeys, challenges, and triumphs of so many incredible women was truly awe-inspiring. Events like this remind us how important it is to continue supporting one another, advocating for mental health, and working toward a future where every woman is empowered to thrive.

Thank you to everyone who shared their stories and helped make the evening so impactful. ✨

NAMI Greater Houston was delighted to welcome students from the University of Florida Gulf Coast who visited our offices as part of their Alternative Spring Break program to support our outreach initiatives.

During their time with us, these dedicated students helped label outreach brochures, organize our supply closet, and record anti-stigma messages to promote mental health awareness. Most importantly, they brought incredible energy and enthusiasm while serving the Greater Houston community.

We are grateful for their commitment to service and for choosing to spend their spring break supporting mental health advocacy.

NAMI Greater Houston was honored to present NAMI’s “In Our Own Voice” program at Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Second-year students engaged thoughtfully with our presenters, asking insightful questions and demonstrating a strong commitment to understanding lived experiences with mental health.

The day concluded on a heartfelt note, as our presenters received beautiful handwritten thank-you notes from the students in appreciation of the powerful stories and meaningful dialogue shared during the program. For more information about In Our Own Voice call NAMI GH at 713.970.4419.

NAMI Greater Houston’s Evening of Hope gathering in Fort Bend was a meaningful and uplifting evening of connection, encouragement, and shared strength.
These monthly gatherings create space for individuals and families navigating the recovery journey associated with serious mental illness to come together in community, find support, and be reminded that they are not alone.
We look forward to expanding Evening of Hope throughout our seven-county service area.
If you are interested in hosting a gathering in your community, we would welcome the opportunity to partner with you. Please call 713-970-4415 to schedule an Evening of Hope at your location.
Together, we continue building hope across Greater Houston.
