NAMI Greater Houston

NAMI Greater Houston NAMI Greater Houston envisions a healing community where all persons affected by mental illness can experience resiliency on the road to wellness.

The mission of NAMI Greater Houston is to provide advocacy, education, support and public awareness so that all individuals and families affected by mental illness can build better lives. NAMI Greater Houston is challenging one of the greatest unmet needs in society: Mental Illness. One in five families in any given year is touched in some way with a serious mental illness. Mental illnesses are biological brain disorders. In fact, mental disorders together account for more than 15 percent of the overall burden of disease from all causes--even more than for all forms of cancer. While mental illnesses have an immense impact on individuals and families, less than half of those who suffer from these disorders seek care. The prevalence of stigma, shame and guilt are the most acknowledged reasons why many people suffer and are denied full participation in society. For many, mental illness is still a taboo topic, and is an illness that is treated as if it is unrelated to our physical well-being. Mental illness deserves the same compassion, understanding and access to treatment and support in the same manner that is given to other biological illnesses. At NAMI Greater Houston we support individuals living with mental illness and their families, and we advocate ensuring that they are treated respectfully and fairly. We envision a future where there is a well-funded community-based mental health system using proven quality treatments, and where people with mental illness are not heavily represented in the criminal justice system. We also envision a well-informed public that understands that we can change the face of mental illness through support, education and advocacy. At the heart of our efforts, we are the catalysts of change in our community and every step we take we strive to offer hope, reform and health to all Houstonians through support, education, and advocacy. We welcome you to our page and we hope that you will find the information and resources you desire, and that you will join forces with us as we stand for change! Learn More:
