Breaking the Cycle of ADHD Shame 🌿

Do you ever feel like you’re constantly apologizing for just being yourself? 😔

For many of us with ADHD, "shame" can feel like a constant companion. It’s that heavy weight that comes from years of being told we’re "too much," "not enough," or "just not trying hard enough." But here is the truth: ADHD is a neurological difference, not a character flaw.

I recently read a powerful piece by ADDitude Magazine titled "How to Get Rid of ADHD Shame: A Guide to Self-Compassion." It breaks down why we feel this way and, more importantly, how we can start to dismantle that shame through self-forgiveness and understanding.

It’s time to stop the cycle of self-criticism and start building a life that works with your brain, not against it.

✨ Want to work on conquering feelings of shame related to your ADHD? I’m here to support you in that journey. You can book a consultation directly through my Headway link in the comments.

Sometimes it’s easier for a puppet to be scared than it is for the child. 🦊 Play allows children to externalize their stress. It’s deep emotional processing. When you notice your child is feeling stressed, it can be helpful to have them draw what their feelings look and feel like. 🎭 Visit my link on Headway to schedule a consultation session to learn more.

When a child is stressed, try: "I wonder if you’re feeling a little worried right now." 💭 This gives them the space to agree or disagree without feeling pressured. In consultation we work together to support your child in handling big feelings🗣️ Visit my link on Headway to schedule a consultation session to learn more.

Parents: Your calm is contagious. 🧘‍♀️ When your child is spiraling, they borrow your nervous system. Let's work on keeping your tank full. I love working with parents individually and with your kiddos! As part of the therapy process, I incorporate regular parent consultations to work on strategies and review progress. I also welcome parents into the therapy space. I believe success happens when we collaborate together⚓❤️ Visit my link on Headway to schedule a consultation session to learn more.

Sit still" is often the hardest request for a person who has ADHD. 🏃‍♂️ In my office, movement is welcome! When we honor the need to move, the brain can finally focus. I can incorporate play, expressive arts, or sandtray exploration!🌀 Visit my link on Headway to schedule a consultation session to learn more.

Anxious kids don't need more logic; they need more felt safety. 🏠 In CCPT, we play it out. When a child feels in control of the playroom, they feel in control of their world. 🎢 Visit my link on Headway to schedule a consultation session to learn more.
