Hospice is about living fully, not giving up. Learn 5 myths and the truths behind them.
Myth 1: Hospice means giving up hope.
Truth: Hospice is about shifting the focus from curing to caring — prioritizing comfort, connection, and quality of life. Patients often feel more hopeful once pain and stress are managed.
Myth 2: Hospice is only for the last few days of life.
Truth: Many patients receive hospice care for months. The earlier hospice begins, the more support patients and families can experience physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Myth 3: Choosing hospice means the family will lose support.
Truth: Hospice adds an entire team of nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers to walk beside the family — not replace them.
Myth 4: Hospice is only for people with cancer.
Truth: Hospice serves anyone with a life-limiting illness — including heart disease, dementia, lung disease, stroke, and more.
Myth 5: Hospice care happens only in a facility.
Truth: Most hospice patients receive care right at home — or wherever they call home. The goal is comfort in familiar surroundings, surrounded by loved ones.
