Dr. Lawnin grew up on the north side of Houston, graduating from The John Cooper School. After high school, he left Texas and went to college at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. While in Nashville, Dr. Lawnin obtained a bachelor’s degree in engineering with a focus on biomedical engineering. It was these studies that led him to attending dental school at New York University. After receiving his Doctorate in Dental Surgery in New York, Dr. Lawnin decided to return home for a two-year residency at the University of Texas School of Dentistry and Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. During this residency, Dr. Lawnin treated patients of all walks of life, including complex patients like those who are hospitalized, head and neck cancer survivors, and special needs patients, using advanced dental techniques including conscious and IV sedation, complex full mouth rehabilitation, the latest in implant dentistry, and special patient care.

After several years of "reverse commuting" to the Woodlands, Dr. Lawnin is excited to join Tanglewood Dental Associates. He is an active member in the Houston dental community, including memberships in the American Dental Association, Texas Dental Association, Greater Houston Dental Society, Academy of General Dentistry, and International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Dr. Lawnin also maintains the title of Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Texas School of Dentistry where he serves as an attending for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry and General Practice residencies. Outside of the office, Dr. Lawnin constantly works on making Houston a better city. He serves on the Board of Directors for A 2nd Cup, a non-profit coffeeshop that aids the fight against human trafficking in Houston. He also serves as a leader at The Story Houston, a contemporary church within St. Luke's United Methodist, where he is heavily involved in Jubilee Prison Ministries. When not treating patients, Dr. Lawnin loves spending time with his beautiful wife, Brittany, learning about specialty coffee, and tinkering with his golf game.

Did you know that mouthwash you’re using is increasing your chance of developing oral cancer? Yep. That green one. The one your grandpa used. The one that gives you a little burn. The one your old dentist swore by. It increases your odds of developing oral cancer.

Oral cancer (like any cancer) is a complex disease. There’s not one thing that causes it. It’s a group of things. Genetics play a role. Early detection can help prevent benign lesions from advancing to malignancies. Not all early areas of suspicion will become problematic. You get the point. It’s SUPER complicated.

But the same way not all smokers get lung cancer, or not all tan people get skin cancer, not everyone will develop oral cancer.

On the same note though, you want to wear sunscreen when you go outside right? So why would you knowingly increase your chances of oral cancer? Especially when there are SO many great alcohol free options in the market.

Are you going to get new alcohol free mouthwash?

Did you know that the mouth isn’t the only cause of bad breath? Sure, not brushing your teeth will cause your breath to stink. Oral hygiene matters. If your personal hygiene falls off, you’re going to start smelling.

Truth is though, oral hygiene isn’t the only thing that prevents bad breath. The mouth is connected to the entire body. That sinus infection you’ve been nursing can cause your breath to smell. Tonsillitis, yep it’ll cause your breath to stink. Acid reflux? One of the biggest causes. Kidney disease or diabetes? Yep. They can make your breath stink too.

The mouth is part of a bigger system, your body. We forget that at times. Personally, I didn’t have bad breath, but I suffer from silent reflux. That’s reflux that doesn’t hurt or have many symptoms. I noticed it from a cough and weird taste in my mouth a few years ago.

So if your mouthwash isn’t working, your oral hygiene is impeccable, but you still have bad breath, look outside the mouth. That mouthwash not working? Maybe there is something else going on.

Ice chewing might be the most sneaky destructive habit we see. From a dentist perspective, it’s horrifying. Why? Cause you are slowly wearing down the enamel. Why is it so sneaky destructive? Cause it happens slowly over time and most people have no idea.

Technology is helping us identify wear easier, but the best thing you can do for your teeth is avoid the little things that beat them up. Ice chewing is chief amongst the habits to kick.

What other habits are you doing? Let us know and we’ll tell you if it’s ok.

Drinks are the secret destroyer of teeth. Not all the time, but more often than not, when we see a sudden change in someone’s teeth we look towards their beverage choices. Why? Simple. We consume them all day long without thinking about them like food.

Truth is that drinks often contain just as much if not more sugars than food, and they also are almost all acidic. Acid erodes the enamel. It starts the cavity process.

What you sip throughout the day has a huge impact on your teeth. What are you sipping on? Let us know in the comments.

All parents (myself included) have been there. Kid falls and the world feels unright. You wanna put them back the way they were. Make sure everything is going to be ok. Then you get a doctor who says “yeah, we’re just gonna watch it.”

A patient texted me this week with concern about their toddler. The pediatric dentists told them no to worry, and I agree. But why not make a video about it? There have got to be more people with the same concerns.

What else can we answer for you?
