March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize the impact women have made across history — and an important reminder to prioritize women’s health.

Many people still think of heart disease as a “men’s health issue,” but the reality is that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States.

Symptoms in women can look different than the classic chest pain many people expect. Women may experience shortness of breath, fatigue, nausea, jaw pain, or discomfort in the back or shoulders.

Because symptoms can be subtle, they are sometimes dismissed or attributed to stress or anxiety. This delay in recognition can lead to delayed treatment.

Knowing your risk factors, staying active, monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol, and having regular check-ups can make a significant difference in prevention and early detection.

At Texas Cardiology Associates, our team focuses on identifying risk early and helping patients take proactive steps toward long-term heart health.

Not everyone has the same risk for developing a blood clot. Extended immobility, recent surgery, pregnancy, hormone therapy, smoking, and a personal or family history of clots can all increase the likelihood of a DVT. Understanding your individual risk is one of the most important steps in prevention. As part of DVT Awareness Month, we’re continuing to highlight how to recognize risk and protect your health.

Most leg swelling is harmless and often related to things like salt intake or standing for long periods. However, when swelling occurs in just one leg and is accompanied by pain, warmth, or a feeling of tightness, it may signal something more serious. A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, typically in the leg, and while it is treatable, early evaluation is important to prevent complications.

March is DVT Awareness Month, and throughout the coming weeks we’ll be discussing symptoms to watch for, common risk factors, travel precautions, and when it’s time to seek medical care. If you notice sudden or unexplained changes, it’s always worth having them assessed.

❤️ Heart Health Myth Busted with Dr. Salazar

“You have to make extreme changes to improve your heart health.”

According to Dr. Robert L. Salazar, that’s simply not true.

Dr. Salazar encourages patients to focus on:
• Eating more whole, minimally processed foods
• Incorporating consistent movement
• Practicing mindfulness or meditation for 20–30 minutes, 4–5 times per week

Small, steady changes often matter more than extreme restrictions.

Follow along for more heart health myth-busting from the team at Texas Cardiology Associates. 💙

When are lifestyle changes enough… and when is medication necessary?

There’s a common misconception that heart conditions can always be reversed naturally. While nutrition, movement, and weight management are powerful tools, they aren’t always enough on their own.

If your numbers are mildly elevated, lifestyle changes may be an appropriate first step.

But if your blood pressure or cholesterol is significantly elevated — or you have additional risk factors — medication may be necessary to reduce your long-term risk of heart attack or stroke.

It’s not lifestyle versus medication.
It’s about the right plan for your risk profile.

Prevention is personal.
