Most leg swelling is harmless and often related to things like salt intake or standing for long periods. However, when swelling occurs in just one leg and is accompanied by pain, warmth, or a feeling of tightness, it may signal something more serious. A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, typically in the leg, and while it is treatable, early evaluation is important to prevent complications.

March is DVT Awareness Month, and throughout the coming weeks we’ll be discussing symptoms to watch for, common risk factors, travel precautions, and when it’s time to seek medical care. If you notice sudden or unexplained changes, it’s always worth having them assessed.

❤️ Heart Health Myth Busted with Dr. Salazar

“You have to make extreme changes to improve your heart health.”

According to Dr. Robert L. Salazar, that’s simply not true.

Dr. Salazar encourages patients to focus on:
• Eating more whole, minimally processed foods
• Incorporating consistent movement
• Practicing mindfulness or meditation for 20–30 minutes, 4–5 times per week

Small, steady changes often matter more than extreme restrictions.

Follow along for more heart health myth-busting from the team at Texas Cardiology Associates. 💙

When are lifestyle changes enough… and when is medication necessary?

There’s a common misconception that heart conditions can always be reversed naturally. While nutrition, movement, and weight management are powerful tools, they aren’t always enough on their own.

If your numbers are mildly elevated, lifestyle changes may be an appropriate first step.

But if your blood pressure or cholesterol is significantly elevated — or you have additional risk factors — medication may be necessary to reduce your long-term risk of heart attack or stroke.

It’s not lifestyle versus medication.
It’s about the right plan for your risk profile.

Prevention is personal.

Meet the Heart Behind Texas Cardiology Associates

Meet Christin “Chris” Touchet, MS, APRN, NP-C, ACNPC-AG, CMC — a board-certified nurse practitioner who has specialized in cardiovascular medicine for more than 12 years.

Chris has served the North Houston community as an advanced practice registered nurse since 2010 and brings extensive experience managing patients with complex cardiac conditions. Before joining Texas Cardiology Associates in 2023, she spent years caring for critically ill patients in intensive care units and working alongside cardiologists in the hospital setting.

Her passion for heart care is deeply personal — both her husband and son were born with congenital heart disease and have undergone open-heart surgeries. That experience fuels her commitment to education, prevention, and compassionate, patient-centered care.

Why learning CPR can save a life ❤️

Cardiac arrest can happen suddenly—and when it does, every second matters. CPR helps keep blood and oxygen flowing to the brain and vital organs until emergency care arrives. In fact, immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival.

The powerful part? You don’t need to be a medical professional to make a difference. With basic training, anyone can step in and help save a life.

How to get CPR certified:
• Look for local classes through hospitals, community centers, or fire departments
• Get certified through trusted organizations like the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
• Choose in-person or blended online + hands-on options that fit your schedule

Learning CPR is a simple skill—but it can mean everything in a critical moment. 🫀

Visible, twisted, or achy veins at the end of the day aren’t just cosmetic — they can be your body’s early warning sign.

Varicose veins are extremely common (about 25 million U.S. adults have them), but for some people, they’re the first step toward a more advanced condition called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) — when your veins struggle to return blood back to the heart efficiently.

The good news?
Early awareness makes a big difference. Understanding the symptoms, risk factors, and when to seek care can help prevent discomfort from progressing into long-term circulation issues.
