We’ve been working with the Yoga Sutras these past months in Study & Restore, and now we’re transitioning to the Bhagavad Gita.

The Gita is set on a battlefield, featuring a war from the distant past. Rival armies composed of family members face one another, about to fight for a kingdom. This battle can be seen as a metaphor for the war within all of us, between the forces of light and darkness in all of our hearts.

We’ll begin diving in this Thursday, covering chapters 1-4. If you have a copy of the Gita (any translation is fine), feel free to read ahead of class. If not, no worries! Our time together will inspire you pick up the text.

Next week, we continue our work on padmasana (lotus pose), taking care to allow the pose to blossom in its own time. Our preparation will remind us to engage the muscles that turn the thigh out, keep the knee joint stable, and not overextend the ankle.

Join us on the continued journey! See you on your mat.

Watching the launch of the Orion spacecraft that would take four astronauts around the moon and back to Earth, I was moved to tears. It felt so good to be a part of something hopeful, something we could all connect on. I knew it was more than that, though—there was something deep inside me that felt touched, soothed.

Perhaps it was the divine aspect of me, or the fact
that I am made up of the very stuff of stars. That part of me connected to the mission of exploring our universe, expanding beyond these very beautiful confines of our planet and our day-to-day struggles. That part of me felt awe and gratitude.

Yoga gives us the tools to be able to remember the beauty of the day to day, to remind us that we are capable of greatness. And greatness doesn’t have to be getting in a spacecraft and blasting into orbit (yikes! not for me lol). It can be taking care with your sick pet, making sure he or she is comfortable. It can be making a meal to nourish people around you. It can be calling your loved ones to check in on them. Whatever it is, cultivating a yoga practice is one way to remind yourself that you are expansive and cosmic.

🪷 Lotus Pose (padmasana) is on the horizon!

After two weeks of laying the groundwork, next week’s classes will focus on putting those skills to work in this iconic posture. We’ll be weaving in half lotus with twisting, as well as solid work in our standing poses, to continue opening the hips and preparing the body.

Full lotus can be our long-game goal, even if it’s not in our sights yet. Whether you’re working toward the full expression or focusing on the preparation, something in this sequence for everyone. Meet me on the mat and let’s keep the momentum going! 🙏✨

Let’s put our external rotation skills to work next week in vasisthasana (side plank), exploring the full expression of the pose with the leg lifted, which has a similar action in that leg to trikonasana (triangle).

Along the way, we’ll touch on our standing poses and inversions — a common thread we will be weaving throughout the month. See you in practice!

In April we turn to a key idea in many of the yoga postures and, in life: external rotation of the hips. This is the action of turning the thigh away from the midline in the ball-and-socket joint of the hip, and it turns up in so many of the yoga poses that we’ll explore this month!

We’ll pair external rotation with internal rotation and lengthening the front of the hip — all from the lens of building strength and mobility. Learning and working on the action of external rotation will help bring ease across the entire cadre of yoga postures but, more importantly, in your life. We spend so much time seated at a desk, or in a car, or on a couch; working on
hip rotation will help restore a more neutral posture so you can live with more lightness and ease.

See you on the mat!
