Atha Yoga is a space where we honor the traditional roots of yoga, a sacred art and practice that comes to us from India, while keeping it relevant and fresh for today’s students.

03/23/2026

Advancing Your Āsana is a monthly class at Atha Yoga where we continue the work we do in our weekly 90min classes but with deeper exploration and focus.

This month we’ll keep strengthening our hips, core and arms with postures that can also help us to understand ourselves through the ideas of presence and non-attachment.

Join us: March 28 | 2p (in-studio)

Let’s wrap up our arm balancing exploration with Eka Hasta Bhujasana (and perhaps some related friends.) We’ll continue to prepare with work on hip mobility, core activation, and arm strength.

Not only do arm-balancing postures help us build confidence, focus, and strength, but working on them prepares us for the difficult seated postures in yoga asana. These seated poses are the focus in the ancient texts on the postures and what lies beyond. They are the most mystical in the catalog of asanas!

Join us on the mat next week:

— Mon 6:30P | Tues 10A (in-studio)
— Tues 6P (online)

Next week we’ll continue exploring Bakasana (crow/crane pose) while also taking a look at Eka Pada Bakasana II (one-legged crow/crane pose).

This variation of Bakasana will allow us to explore the same key actions of drawing the sternum up and lifting/expanding the back ribs, in addition to getting our legs over the arms. We’ll also continue to put our focus on the process versus the outcome as we explore challenging shapes!

Come learn and practice:

— Monday 630p (in-studio)
— Tuesday 10a (in-studio) | 6p (online)
— Saturday, 3/28 | 2p (in-studio)

In our asana classes this month, we’ve been exploring the idea of doing our best without attachment to the results of our actions.

Approaching everything we do with this mood helps us achieve the equanimity that Krisha speaks of in this verse. Of course, this is easier said than done, but practice is the path. Step by step, we can work on our attachment to outcomes and start to see how releasing results allows us to live firmly in the moment and with more joy.

In Study and Restore this month we’re discussing the kleshas. The kleshas (commonly called the afflictions) are an idea from the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali. We can also think of them as the veils that cover pure awareness. They are common to all of us.

One klesha we’ve been looking at in the context of our physical asana practice this month is attachment
to pleasure, or raga. We’ll learn all about it in class, as well as the other four kleshas. After our discussion, we’ll enjoy a yoga nidra practice to restore and integrate what we have learned.

Next week, we take a look at bakasana (crow pose). We’ll work on the more classical form of the shape, which includes broadening the back, strengthening the core, and getting depth in the hips. We do this all while exploring the yogic idea of non-attachment to outcomes.

Come and practice with us!

Join us for Alignment Practice in March as we explore how increasing mobility (and strength!) in our hips, combined with core power, can give us access to poses in the arm balance category. This doesn’t mean we have to be able to “do” every pose, but it will help us understand how we might get access to the actions in the pose, and maybe one day find liftoff!

This spring and summer, we have lots of opportunities to learn and practice. Register at the link in our bio:

— Mondays 6:30p & Tuesdays 10a (In-Studio)
— Tuesdays 6p (Online)
— Sat, 3/28 | Advancing Your Āsana, 2p (In-Studio)

See you on your mat!

Next week we will settle into restoration. We’ve worked hard this month cultivating our prone backbends and inversions, and now it’s time to rest. Practice will include more active shapes in their supported versions, as well as more restful āsanas. We’ll explore some breath work and introspective practice towards the end of class, and you’ll leave feeling revitalized and nourished. Bring your own eye pillow!

Join us:
— Monday 630p (In-studio)
— Tuesday 10a (In-studio) | 6p (Online)

See you tomorrow in Advancing Your Āsana and next week on your mat! Have a beautiful weekend.
