Sinus pressure, headaches, ear infections, and a bag full of medications just to get through the day. That was Laytana's reality before she came to see Dr. Kaplan. No one should have to live that way, and the fact that she no longer does is exactly what drives the work we do here every single day.

If chronic sinus issues are running your life, relief is closer than you think.

Skipping professional ear cleaning is more common than you'd think — and so is suffering from muffled hearing, ear pressure, and discomfort because of it. Earwax buildup is one of the most overlooked culprits, and DIY methods like cotton swabs often make it worse, not better.

Getting your ears professionally cleaned by an ENT is quick, safe, and can make an immediate difference. Plus, you'll get a full ear health check while you're at it.

Cedar fever is back in Houston, and if you're feeling it this season, you already know it doesn't feel like ordinary allergies.

What makes cedar fever different is the source. Ashe juniper pollen is one of the most aggressive allergens in the region, and when it peaks, it can trigger symptoms that rival a full-blown sinus infection: intense congestion, facial pressure, fatigue, and that relentless feeling that nothing is helping. Antihistamines take the edge off for some people, but for others, the season just has to run its course.

If cedar fever hits you harder every year, or if it's getting harder to bounce back between seasons, your sinuses may need more than seasonal medication. Call (713) 766-1818 to talk with our team about long-term options for Houston allergy sufferers.

When a patient says “it’s just allergies”… 👀

Sometimes it is. But when symptoms linger, worsen, or come with facial pressure, thick drainage, or headaches, it may be something more than seasonal allergies.

Chronic sinusitis and infections are often misdiagnosed as “just allergies.” The key is knowing when it’s time to take a closer look.

If your symptoms aren’t improving, don’t ignore them. Let’s get to the root cause.

An occasional sneeze is normal. Reaching for tissues multiple times a day, avoiding outdoor plans, and struggling to get through a workday is not.

Frequent sneezing is your body's way of flagging an irritant or an underlying condition it can't clear on its own. For some people it's seasonal allergies. For others, it points to chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, or structural issues that antihistamines and allergy medication simply aren't equipped to fix. And it's worth knowing that allergies can develop at any age, even if you've never had them before.

If you've been managing symptoms without real relief, or if sneezing comes paired with facial pressure, thick discharge, or a reduced sense of smell, it's time to find out what's actually going on. Schedule an appointment at (713) 766-1818.

Think ENT only treats allergies? Think again.

ENT stands for Ear, Nose, and Throat — and each of those areas covers far more than seasonal congestion. From hearing loss and tinnitus to chronic sinusitis, deviated septums, voice changes, reflux-related throat irritation, and even head and neck evaluations — ENT specialists diagnose and treat conditions that affect your breathing, balance, sleep, and overall quality of life.

If you’re dealing with persistent symptoms that haven’t improved, it may be time for a comprehensive ENT evaluation.

Spring allergies in Houston don’t wait for spring.

Cedar pollen is already here — and oak season is right around the corner. With our mild winters, trees never really stop producing pollen. The key is getting ahead of it before symptoms peak in March and April.

Start medications early (nasal sprays take weeks to reach full effect), use saline irrigation daily to rinse out allergens, deep clean your home before pollen coats everything, and make your bedroom a low-allergen space. And if you’re already doing all of that but still can’t breathe clearly, it may be time for a professional evaluation.

You don’t have to suffer through another Houston allergy season.

If a sinus infection left you with ringing, buzzing, or muffled hearing in your ears, that's not a coincidence.

Your sinuses and your ears are connected through the Eustachian tube, a small canal that links your middle ear to the back of your throat. When sinusitis causes swelling and congestion, it can block that tube entirely. When the tube can't equalize pressure in your middle ear, fluid gets trapped, pressure builds, and tinnitus develops. The two conditions are separate, but the structural connection between them is direct.

For most people, the ringing resolves once the sinus infection clears and the Eustachian tube starts functioning normally again. That process can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. But if the tinnitus lingers after the infection is gone, that warrants a professional evaluation to rule out other causes.

The bigger concern is when sinus infections keep coming back. Every flare-up restarts the same cycle: inflammation, Eustachian tube dysfunction, pressure imbalance, and tinnitus. If that pattern sounds familiar, the problem isn't the ear symptoms. It's the chronic sinus drainage issue driving them. Call (713) 766-1818 to schedule a consultation and break the cycle for good.

That pressure and puffiness around your face during a sinus infection is not just discomfort. It's your body telling you exactly where the problem is.

When your sinuses become inflamed and blocked, bacteria or viruses multiply in those spaces and the resulting swelling pushes outward into the surrounding tissue. Where you feel it depends on which sinuses are affected, whether that's your forehead, cheeks, behind your eyes, or the bridge of your nose. It's one of the most common and recognizable symptoms of sinusitis, and it tends to come with other signals: discolored nasal discharge, congestion, reduced sense of smell, fatigue, and post-nasal drip.

For acute cases, medications can help. But if the facial swelling keeps returning despite treatment, that points to a structural drainage problem rather than a one-time infection. Chronic sinusitis creates conditions for repeated infections, and each one brings the swelling back.

Balloon sinuplasty addresses the underlying issue by opening blocked passages and restoring proper drainage. If recurring facial pressure and swelling are part of your life, it's time to treat the cause.
