It's probably not going to be quick or easy, and you'll need the right team for the job! Have you conquered a 3 across challenge?

3 across is an ever-increasing need I encounter as a CPST, and let's be honest, most vehicles just aren't built for it. Fortunately, car seat manufacturers are listening and we have some great narrow options on the market now, including the brand new Chicco Fit3X.

I always recommend working with a CPST, at least virtually if in person is not possible), for any 3 across setup (and let's be honest, for any car seat in general!). There are so many extra considerations for choosing the correct seats and getting them installed safely!

Car Seat Q&A is back!

If deep dives are your jam, this is for you! This is an opportunity to bring those burning questions, or listen in on the discussion about one of the most common car seat topics.

It's not a presentation! I'll start the conversation, and then we'll go wherever the tangents take us.

Eager participants and camera-off lurkers alike are welcome!

3 frequent mistakes I see with all versions of the Evenflo Revolve 360 rotating car seat. These each apply to other seats, too, so give your installation a check no matter which seat you have!

Over 70% of car seats have at least one mistake, so chances are, you probably need to fix one of these things on yours!

1. Car seat installations need to move less than 1" side to side when checked at the belt path with moderate force.

2. The top tether can reduce forward motion of the head in a crash by 4-6", greatly reducing the chances of the head striking the vehicle interior.

3. Harness straps must pass the pinch test for tightness. Once slack is removed from around the hips and the adjuster strap is pulled tight, you should not be able to pinch any slack vertically at the collarbone.

Be sure to check your manual for specific questions about your seat, or reach out to a CPST (👋) if you're still not sure!

We don't really know which car seats or booster seats perform better than others in crashes, but we do know that using a seat correctly is the most important factor!

The seat belt can only do its job if it is positioned correctly on the child's body, and if a child is slouching, leaning to the side, or propping their legs to find a comfortable position, this can increase the chances of a negative outcome.

A simple, inexpensive seat can absolutely provide excellent protection, but upgraded features may improve comfort and support, and that can make a difference in how well a child is positioned in the seat, especially if they are younger, if it's a long drive, or if they fall asleep. Then again, comfort is relative, and a "fancier" seat may not be the best for every kid!

Overall maturity to sit correctly is a big factor, too, so don't rush to a booster before they're ready!

Which features do you look for in a booster seat?

This was requested as a permanent post, and who am I to say no to that?

This is the Graco SlimFit3 LX/True3Fit LX, and it can be a very versatile car seat, including for travel. Consider this when shopping if you're looking for a seat that can double as a travel seat!

It's worth the extra hassle of planning, getting through the airport, and getting on and off the plane for me!

I'll be honest, no one has ever told me that a car seat saved their child's life on a plane, but I've seen plenty of reports of a seat getting lost or damaged from being checked, leaving the family scrambling for a solution or fighting with an airline for recompense. That's why I always encourage families to consider what their plan will be if they arrive at the airport without a usable seat.
