One of the most common and irritating symptoms for patients suffering with rheumatoid arthritis is drifting of the fingers toward the small finger side of the hand. This is due to increased laxity of the supportive structures of the joints in the hands secondary to the chronic inflammatory response associated with RA. To help prevent this deformity of the fingers, our Certified Hand Therapists fabricated special splints that our patients wear at nighttime to support the fingers in proper alignment and reduce unwanted stress on the supportive structures of the joints to help prevent deformity of the fingers.

It is not uncommon for patients who have suffered a finger injury to have difficulty with regaining full extension of the PIP joint (middle joint) of the finger resulting in a bent/flexed finger that is constantly getting in the way when trying to grasp objects or reach in one's pockets. Pictured here is a custom orthosis that one of our Certified Hand Therapists fabricated for one of their patients. The patient will wear it intermittently throughout the day and during the nighttime hours to help regain full extension of the finger. The use of this custom orthosis in conjunction with an individualized treatment approach will help this patient GET BETTER FASTER!

Here at DPT, our therapists go above and beyond to help our patients get better faster. Pictured here is a custom fabricated elbow splint that the patient is able to wear at home to help the stretch the elbow following surgery. The elastic bands allow the patient to control the amount of stretch that is applied to the elbow, allowing for a comfortable but highly effective stretch when not in the clinic. The patient was very excited to regain motion of her elbow to be able to scratch her back, put her hair up, wash her face and put her glasses on without difficulty.

Here at DPT, our Certified Hand Therapists are masters of fabrication of custom splints for their patients. This splint was fabricated for a patient who recently had surgery on his wrist; however, the therapist needed to immobilize the wrist and limit the patient's ability to rotate his forearm while allow for full motion at the elbow and digits. Our hand therapists are always coming up with creative ideas to optimize function while protecting and promoting the healing process of each patient's injuries!
