Mind, Body & Spirit Support Group

Hey Folks! What a winter we are having, eh? Lots has been going on and some changes are going to be happening this coming year. Having only one hike leader to support hikes in four counties every month is unfortunately too much. Hike leader Bee is focusing more on career goals in wilderness medicine this year and will not be as available to lead all the scheduled hikes. As of right now, there will be no hike leader for the Ulster/Dutchess county hikes. Some of the Columbia/Greene county hikes will not be lead because of schedule conflicts. I wish this wasn’t the case, this has been a very rewarding support group, but with no volunteers to help after five years, it may be time to move on from this project. The hikes will go on as scheduled, but it will be the responsibility of the participants to act accordingly to the rules and ethics of being at the designated preserves and in natural spaces. Please practice safety and leave no trace ethics. DM anytime with questions or email recoveryhikeny@gmail.com. If you are interested leading hikes please let me know. Thank you to everyone who has supported the effort over the previous four years. You are seen and appreciated!

Here’s the featured preserve for February. Welcome to Nutten Hook preserve. A historical site along the Hudson River, across from Coxsackie. Parking for the site is on the southbound side of Route 9J. There are a few short trails which loop around and it’s a great spot to put your kayak in the Hudson, on summery days. Keep your eyes peeled for Bald Eagles and Ospreys.

Not a suggestion. Please don’t pass a box like this by, registering at the trailhead is important. By registering, not only does it provide important information about trail usage, but also provides information that may save your life.

This year we’re trying something new. Each month RecoveryHike is going to show our following a spot in the region to go explore. There are so many natural areas to visit in the area, we can’t schedule a hike in all of them, but you may find the time.

Welcome to (the nature conservancy) Lewis A. Sywer preserve in Stuyvesant, NY. Located on the southbound side of state route 9J, this preserve offers a short stroll through a northern tidal swamp of Red Maple, Ash, Cottonwood and Willow. This ecosystem is rare so far inland and offers a remarkable space to view birds and other wildlife. While there earlier this month I was greeted by a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Parking at this preserve is limited to a shoulder pull-off, so be careful, the trailhead is a short walk from there.

Stay tuned to see February’s featured Hudson Valley preserve.

Last year we celebrated our fourth anniversary of the formation of this support group by going to Howe Cavern. This year, we have something else in mind, but would love to hear suggestions from the community how we should celebrate 5 Years of RecoveryHike. It has to be an outdoor adventure. Let’s hear the suggestions!!

This year’s schedules are headed to the printer, but here’s a look at the hikes for 2026. Thank you for the wonderful work.

We also put together some Spanish language schedules, there will be at least two wheelchair accessible hikes this year and we may even have a doggy day, for those who’d like to bring their puppy friends (normally we do not allow pets, so keep your ears peeled about that hike as it is not listed on the schedule.)
This year we are really looking for volunteers to lead a hike, or two. Reach out if you’re interested. This is going to be a great year!

What a Weekend!! Two Hikes in a row. The first 10 are from our stroll through the woods at Israel Wittman Sanctuary. What a great spot for Mt. biking and simply enjoying the evergreen canopy.

Today We made it to the top of the Catskills for our final hike until March. Happy Solstice Everyone, the days are getting brighter! Have a safe holiday season and New Year!

Tomorrow is the final regularly scheduled hike of the year! We will be going to Israel Whittman Sanctuary in Saugerties (99 Pld Sawmill rd. Saugerties, NY). Be mindful to wear appropriate footwear, if you have traction, like micro spikes, it’s best to bring them; this warm wet weather is going to turn to ice on the trails. Meet up at 10am.
