Good news from IA. The Iowa PA bill (HF 424) removing the state required physician supervision was signed into law by Governor Reynolds on 5-10-23.

All state required PA supervision is repealed except for PAs who own their practice and have less that 2 years of PA experience. Rules for that situation will be written jointly by the PA and medical boards. This bit of sausage making was required by the the senate majority leader before he would bring the bill up for a vote. And it caused the med. society to drop their opposition. Effective grassroots legislator education by PAs, some insightful physicians who put patients first, help from retired PAs and experienced PAs from previous campaigns , organized and detail oriented orthopedic PA (Jim Earel, our legislative chair), quick and timely skilled help from AAPA and some luck made the difference. We nearly caught up with the Dutch PAs (who got licensed on their own qualifications after less than 10 years).

Regarding my picture with the governor we were discussing what we can do about corporate medicine closing small town clinics in Iowa. One is already closed this year, 2 more are on the chopping block. My clinic in Redfield (pop 835) was closed 35 years ago by its big city owner. Libby and I reopened in 1988 right after it was closed and we are still only medical care in town. This bill will give us a chance to hand it off to another PA when we can no longer do it. These towns would have a chance to keep or regain their only medical clinics if the US Congress would pass the Rural Health Clinics Burden Reduction bill, S. 198. Please contact your US Senators asking them to support this bill to keep care in small towns.
