September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

Su***de prevention happens in the moment by connecting people to mental health crisis services and in our human to human interactions. Su***de prevention also happens over time by improving accessibility to lifesaving resources, establishing pathways that encourage help-seeking, and reducing structural societal barriers that place people at higher risk for su***de such as improving access to basic necessities like food, shelter, and healthcare.

Su***de prevention can also take place in the form of voting and political advocacy. Recent federal budget cuts have impacted several lifesaving resources in Wisconsin including the Uplift Wisconsin Warmline, hosted by Mental Health America of Wisconsin, which was forced to shut down earlier this year. Additionally, funding has recently been shut down for an LGBTQ+ option on the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline.

Improving access to care and reducing risks for folks at higher risk for su***de is imperative, and we can use our voices to make a difference. Consider contacting your local government officials and representatives to ask them to support funding for access to mental health services.

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month.

There are simple and practical steps to take if you are concerned that someone you know may be struggling with their mental health or thoughts of su***de. A myth is that talking about su***de puts the idea of su***de in someone's head. In reality, asking about thoughts of su***de opens up a channel for connection and communication.

If someone does disclose that they are thinking about su***de, listen without judgement and acknowledge the emotional pain they are experiencing. Next, keep them safe by staying with them and reducing access to lethal items until help can be sought out. Help them connect to mental health crisis services such as the contacting 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline or accompanying them to the nearest emergency room if necessary. Finally, follow up and stay in touch to maintain connection during a period that can feel incredibly isolating.

💊 Let’s talk about medication side effects

If you’re thinking about starting psychiatric medication, concerns about side effects are completely understandable. At Calming Currents Psychiatry, we approach these conversations openly and carefully so you feel informed and supported.

Here’s what to know:
Side effects are possible, but not guaranteed
Some people experience no side effects. Others may notice changes early on, which often improve with time or small adjustments.

Effectiveness and side effects are always balanced
The goal is not just to reduce symptoms, but to do so in a way that allows you to feel well overall. We consider both how well the medication is working and how it’s affecting your day-to-day functioning.

Ongoing adjustments are part of care
If something isn’t working or doesn’t feel right, we’re here to troubleshoot. You don’t have to settle for feeling “off” to feel better. Our focus is on finding the best possible fit for your needs.

Medication is just one piece of care. When it’s used, it should support your life, not complicate it.

Explore care at your pace
Book a consultation to discuss what’s right for you
No pressure, no rush — just a supportive space to get started

🎒 Preparing for the School Year Starts with Mental Health

Heading back to school can bring a mix of emotions for adolescents. For some, it brings excitement. For others, it brings anxiety, stress, or uncertainty. These feelings are normal and they’re also a signal to check in on mental well-being.

At Calming Currents Psychiatry, we help adolescents and families navigate this transition with clarity and support. Whether your child is already receiving care or you're noticing new concerns, early planning can make a big difference.
Five ways to support your child’s mental health before school begins:

1. Begin easing into consistent sleep and daily routines
2. Create space for honest conversations about emotions
3. Focus on small goals rather than perfection
4. Encourage breaks and downtime
5. Reach out if symptoms become disruptive or persistent

💊 Let’s clear up a few common myths about psychiatric medication

There’s a lot of misinformation about mental health treatment. Here are three common myths we hear and the facts to help you make informed decisions.

Myth 1: Medication will change my personality
Fact: Medication is meant to relieve symptoms, not change who you are. The goal is to help you feel more like yourself.

Myth 2: If I start medication, I’ll have to take it forever
Fact: Many people use medication for a period of time based on their goals and how they are feeling. Some people find that medications help them immensely and choose to remain on them for longer periods of time while others use them more episodically. Plans are adjusted as your needs change.

Myth 3: Medication is a last resort
Fact: For some people, it is a helpful part of care early on. Medication can help reduce the severity and frequency of symptoms to allow you to make meaningful changes in your life with greater ease. We also talk about therapy, self-care, and other options when making a plan together.

Medication is not about quick fixes. It is one tool among many that can support long-term wellness when used thoughtfully.

🌿 We’re honored when patients share their experience

Mental health care is deeply personal. That’s why it means so much when someone chooses to share their story. Here's what one longtime patient had to say about their care at Calming Currents Psychiatry:

"Jordan Madden is a fantastic medication management provider. I've seen him for a few years now and have followed him from two other organizations so that I can stay a patient of his. He's friendly, courteous, and has never made me feel judged or 'crazy' for needing help with my mental health."

"I've found him to be thorough in questions he asks, and he hasn't just suggested extra medication for issues where something else (such as therapy) would be more appropriate. I appreciate that, as nobody wants to be overmedicated. That being said, when I've had medication that hasn't worked well, he's been very helpful in switching me to something else that was more effective for me."

"Jordan really seems to care for his patients and wants to see them succeed. If you're looking for someone down to earth, knowledgeable, professional, and kind to help with your mental health, I can't recommend Jordan enough!"

Every story like this reminds us why we’re here, to offer care that is thoughtful, collaborative, and grounded in trust.

🧠 What happens during a mental health consultation?

Starting care can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re unsure what to expect. At Calming Currents Psychiatry, our consultations are designed to help you feel heard, understood, and supported from the beginning.

During an initial evaluation, we take time to:
✔️ Learn about your current struggles and concerns
✔️ Understand your medical and mental health history
✔️ Explore your life experiences, environment, and stressors
✔️ Discuss treatment goals and options
✔️ Answer questions and offer next steps

After the evaluation, we may recommend continuing care with our team through medication management when appropriate. We’re also familiar with a wide range of local and regional resources and can refer you to therapists, specialists, or additional services if needed.

Our goal is to connect you with the right care, whether that’s with us or a trusted community partner.

🌿 Summer Self-Care Checklist

Taking care of your mental health doesn't have to be complicated. Small, intentional habits can make a real difference in how you feel day to day.

Here are five simple ways to care of your mind and body this summer:

✅ Get outside for at least 10 minutes a day
✅ Stick to a consistent sleep schedule
✅ Limit screen time when possible
✅ Stay connected with supportive people
✅ Check in with how you’re feeling and ask for help when needed

Self-care is not a cure, but it is a foundation. If you’re struggling with mood, anxiety, or burnout, professional support can help.
