Thank you for being such an important part of our CFRT community.

❓Tell us about your story
I’m Matt, 40 years old father of three. Being a dad is my favorite thing in the world and after the birth of my second child I started realizing how important being an active parent is. That’s when I started down my weight loss journey and in the past 2 years I’ve lost almost 60 lbs and at 40 years old I am in the best shape of my life. I wanted to start creating healthy examples for my kids and that has become incredibly important to my wife and I.

❓When did you first come to CrossFit Rail Trail? After my wife Amy nagging me for two years to try a class I finally did. I’ve always dealt with weight issues and I was nervous that people would judge me for not being able to do most of the movements and thought that I was too fat for a place like CrossFit. I was shocked and surprised to be welcomed with such open arms by an incredible group that made me feel like part of the family almost immediately. It will be 4 years next month and it has been an incredible journey and I am very thankful for how this gym has changed my life and the wonderful friends I have made.

❓What accomplishment are you the most proud of (outside and inside of the gym)?
Inside the gym- I believe CrossFit is a perfect example of you get out of it what you put into it. If you work hard you will see results. When I first started everything was a struggle, once I started putting in that work I truly saw the hard work payoff and my proudest accomplishment in the gym is how far I’ve come in 4 years where now I can finish all the workouts in the expected time domain.

Outside of the gym my proudest accomplishment is my family. My wife Amy and I have three beautiful kids that are my “why” for being so dedicated to a healthy life style. I love the active life we lead and I am trying to be the best dad and husband I can be for them.

CFRT Coach Spotlight 🚨💪🏻 Coach JAMAL!!!!

So grateful for everything you do for our community, Coach Jamal!!

Haven’t taken a class with Coach Jamal yet? You need to. 🥳

❓ When did you first start CrossFit? And when did you join the CFRT community? Started CrossFit in 2018 and have been with CFRT for the past 2 years. I was very fortunate to land here when my old gym closed.

❓What inspired you to become a coach? CrossFit immediately resonated with me when I began in 2018 and I wanted to immerse myself as much as possible so I could share with others so I got my coaching certification in 2019.

❓What’s your favorite part about coaching at CFRT?
Favorite part is the people! Most of us start CrossFit for physical fitness but we stay because of the community, the inclusion is unlike anything else I’ve been a part of.

❓What’s one fun fact people might not know about you?
Fun fact about me is that before I started CrossFit I was 70 pounds heavier than I am now and could not do any of the movements, I had gotten so deconditioned over 10 years after having kids. I spent the first few months using only a PVC!

❓What’s your go-to hype song during a workout?
Go to hype song for a workout is “Maybe Memories” by The Used. Bert’s screaming always gets me to push through!

❓Favorite CrossFit movement?
Favorite movement is the muscle up. Whether bar or rings I never thought I would be able to do legit gymnastics, making this is the ultimate testament for what CrossFit can make possible.

❓Least favorite movement? 😅
Least favorite movement is overhead squat, after all these years and reps I still really struggle with this.

❓What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
Best advice to someone starting out is to make a commitment to yourself and be consistent. CrossFit will change your life but you have to put the time and effort in.

❓What do you like to do outside the gym? Outside the gym I enjoy traveling internationally with my family and walking my dogs.

❓What’s your favorite post-workout meal or treat?
Post workout meal I have to go old school with a protein shake. Can’t go wrong with that, gotta feed those muscles!
