Laurel Lake is proud to announce that Crown Center, our Skilled Nursing and Rehab Neighborhood at Laurel Lake, has earned a deficiency-free Ohio Department of Health survey for 2026! Both of Laurel Lake’s licensed areas - Crown Center Skilled Nursing and Rehab AND Greenwood Assisted Living have received deficiency-free surveys in the past year!! This exceptional accomplishment highlights Laurel Lake’s unwavering commitment to providing the highest levels of quality care.

What is a Deficiency-Free Survey?
A deficiency-free survey means that inspectors found Crown Center at Laurel Lake fully meets every federal and state standard for resident care, safety, and environment, with zero citations. In 2025, according to the KFF (a leading non-profit, independent organization focused on U.S. health policy, polling, and journalism), only 3% of Ohio nursing facilities earned this distinction, making it a meaningful mark of excellence.

GOODYEAR BLIMP TOUR
Twenty adventurous Laurel Lake Retirement Community residents went for a tour of Goodyear Wingfoot Lake, Ohio last week. The Goodyear blimp is a very familiar site in our area, as it cruises to and from various major events providing wonderful aerial coverage. Residents were able to learn about the Wingfoot Lake’s fascinating history. The hangar there, built in 1917, serves as the primary maintenance and construction site for Goodyear’s airship fleet. Did you know the floor of the hangar is about the size of 2 football fields side-by-side?

Everyone toured the hangar with the blimp “Wingfoot One” docked inside, learning about the structure and the airship’s fascinating history and features. Residents even got to go inside the blimp’s gondola.

Most people don’t know a whole lot about the blimps and the local locations where they dock. There are actually 3 blimps currently in the US and their hangars are at Wingfoot Lake in Akron, Ohio; Pompano Beach, Florida; and Carson, California.

The massive Akron structure we’re familiar with along Route 224 is an additional local airdock. The Goodyear Airdock is significantly larger - the floor is almost 9 football fields side-by-side!

CROSS-STITCH ARTIST ON DISPLAY
Laurel Lake resident Shirley Mawhorter always has a cross-stitch pattern or two in the works! Stop by the Mike and Mae Collins Art Gallery at Laurel Lake to view her amazing collection of pieces. Shirley’s framed art fills the entire gallery and there is also a display case of three-dimensional items by the front desk. This avid cross stitcher learned to cross-stitch after her retirement in the 90’s and has been busy ever since. Mary’s work ranges from simple hand towels to more elaborate, frameable works of art, many of which she has shared with her family and friends. The display will be up through the end of March.

LAUREL LAKE RESIDENT PROVIDES INSPIRATION
Resident Carol Stanley was featured on yesterday’s WKYC Channel 3’s Heartstrings with Lindsay Buckingham. Carol’s advice for staying young, “Just make yourself get out there.” In this feature, she is hiking with Polly Spalding - another active Laurel Lake neighbor.

Carol Stanley says the secret to feeling young is simple: 'Just make yourself get out there.'
