Our Story

In 1949, Ray and Jeanne VanderLaan purchased the funeral home on Main Street (VanBuren) in Hudsonville. The town grew, and a bigger facility with more parking was needed, so in 1967 they began building in what used to be a cornfield owned by the DeCator’s on 32nd Avenue just south of the new high school.

Ray and Jeanne’s son, Fred and his wife, Joanne, completed Mortuary school in 1986 and began purchasing the funeral home. Ray passed away in 1991 and Jeanne passed away in 1992.

Fred passed away in 2011 and the funeral home is now run by his wife Joanne and two of their children, Kelly VanderLaan Richmond and Richard VanderLaan.

For 70 years, the VanderLaan Funeral Home has remained in the same family. Even though the times have changed, they still believe in serving families like they were their own.
