Some people will tell you that vitamin K isn’t very effective, and I completely disagree.

Vitamin K is VERY effective.

Just like it would be VERY effective to get everyone to take a couple of painkillers before they left home in the mornings.

That would really reduce the number of sick days we lost to headaches, hangovers, period pain and the like.

But that doesn’t make mass medication justifiable, because there are wider issues to take into account.

So yes, vitamin K is very effective when given to newborn babies.

But is it also frustrating that, although only one in several thousand babies would have a problem without it, we don't know enough about which babies would have had a problem without it and which would have been fine.

Because the emphasis has been on the idea that, because it works, we should just give it to all babies.

But this raises some fascinating questions.

Some people will tell you that babies are born with ‘low’ levels of vitamin K, but this is only when you compare them to adults.

It’s possible, and perhaps even likely, that these relatively lower levels benefit newborns in some way.

(My money would be on stem cells, but that's just a researcher's educated guess.)

This is just one of the questions that I have been exploring over the past twenty-five years and which I discuss in my book, Vitamin K and the Newborn.

We need to think more widely about the wider issue, the deeper questions and the bigger picture.

And, as I once wrote,

Part of the solution, I humbly suggest, is to slow or cease our acceptance of the notion that women's and babies' bodies fail so often and so spectacularly, and to be willing to think about how nature, evolution or whatever you believe in might have designed us to land on the earth with what we needed in the first place.

As someone who had two long early labor phases and 10+hr active labor phases, one led to a coerced Cesarean and the other was well supported and led to my VBAC, I love, love, love reading this!

I want to talk about long labors. Why oh why are we in such a hurry!! Sharing with permission.
29 hrs of early labor
11 hrs of active labor
1hr 51 min pushing (aka 2nd stage)
9 min until placenta born (3rd stage)

All of this is NORMAL. there are many reasons that can cause labor to be slower, but it doesn't mean it's not normal. When we have expectations that everything should be faster, we interfere with a normal process, potentially causing outcomes we don't want like a stressed baby and emergency cesarean.

However, if she and her partner are empowered to trust her amazing body, to have confidence in herself, and a team that believes in the process and can offer loving support and encouragement, beautiful things can unfold.

Birth isn't just about the baby, it's a journey to becoming a parent. When we labor, we are bonding with the life we have chosen to bring forth. We are learning our first lesson as a parent to protect this life. We learn that we are stronger than we ever thought we needed to be, laying the groundwork that we can handle anything that comes our way. If we are really lucky we get to see him fall more in love with her each minute as he watches her work tirelessly to bring this life earthside they created together. (We see you Daddy!)

I encourage you to take this journey. Believe in yourself. Surround yourself with people who believe in you. Don't numb yourself to this incredible experience. Be in the moment with this baby, with this partner and experience the magic, if you are a believer (which I am) in God's perfect design.

🔵"Dilation station" a.k.a. the "GET IT DONE position." 💪🏽🔵

Most of my clients know that I love using the toilet for labor. It's the best way to release a pelvic floor and help a baby descend into the pelvis. The contractions are super intense on the potty, but that's because they are super productive! Trust me when I tell you, this is one of the all time best labor positions!

🚽you are naturally prone to relaxing your pelvic floor and perineum while sitting on the toilet.
🚽the bathroom is a place of privacy and solitude and you are used to relaxing in this room.
🚽you are using gravity
🚽you are opening your pelvis.
🚽you are allowing your baby lots of room to rotate and navigate the birth canal.
🚽you can also turn around and straddle the toilet with a pillow in front of you for comfort.

I call it the “dilation station” for a reason. I’ve encouraged many mommies to spend some time laboring on the toilet. It’s not uncommon for baby to come rather quickly after that 🤗

🚫 ᴅᴏɴ'ᴛ ᴡᴀsʜ ɪᴛ ᴏғғ! 🚫

Vernix caseosa, also known as vernix, is the waxy or cheese-like white substance found coating the skin of newborn human babies. It begins to form at about 27 weeks. It is produced by dedicated cells that play protective roles during fetal development and for a few hours after birth.

Don't wash it off!! Rub it in. It's the best lubricant for the baby's skin once the are 🌏 earthside🌎

𝔹𝕖𝕟𝕖𝕗𝕚𝕥𝕤 𝕀𝕟𝕔𝕝𝕦𝕕𝕖:🌻⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
✅Germ fighting superhero - one of the primary purposes of vernix is to protect the infant from unwanted pathogens, both in the womb and out ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅Controls temperature - with its thick, waxy coating, vernix helps to insulate the baby. infants who have it immediately washed off have a significantly higher rate of heat loss⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅Skin cleanser and antioxidant - it offers a protective covering while going through the birth canal, allowing baby to pick up good bacteria & potentially avoid overgrowths of bad bacteria, viruses and fungi⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What purpose does vernix serve?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌿In the womb:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Prevents loss of electrolytes and fluids⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Acts as a microbial barrier from unwanted pathogens⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Provides a protective layer to facilitate skin growth⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌿Out of the womb:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Decreases skin pH and helps form the protective acid mantle⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Protects from pathogens⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Moisturizes and keeps skin soft⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Contains that new baby smell to help mom and baby bond during the golden hour
