ACHIEVE Speech and Language Services, PLLC is a growing speech pathology practice serving the communication needs of children and families in and around Houston, TX. Achieve Speech & Language prides itself on having highly skilled staff, modern therapy equipment, assessment tools, and computer resources. Our therapists frequently attend continuing education courses to stay current in this ever-evolving field. Unsure where to start when starting solids? Here’s a breakdown of our favs!
🥄 num num Gootensil spoons
These spoons promote self feeding with increased success as well as improve oral proprioception! Keep two in rotation and give baby a pre-loaded spoon to self feed while you’re loading the second spoon.

🥤honey bear cup and small weighted cup
Introduction to straw drinking with a honey bear cup increases chances for success. The small weighted open cups allow for improved independent practice with open cup drinking as well.

👶🏼 catch bib
CONVENIENCE. And baby gets a second chance at food that otherwise would have fallen to the floor.

🪑high chair with adjustable foot rest
Posture is KEY when starting solids and promoting safe feeding. You’ll want to look for a high chair with a high back that provides support for 90 degree angles at the hips, knees, and feet. The footrest is key as it allows grounding and promotes proper positioning.

🔪crinkle cutter
Using a crinkle cutter when presenting whole foods with a baby led weaning approach for those harder to hold foods (avocado, bananas, and steamed veggies).

🍽️ stainless steel suction plates and bowls
Let’s face it, those silicone bowls and plates start to smell and make food not as enjoyable after a few uses. Opting for stainless steel with silicone suction cups gives the same convenience without the ick!

Pro tip: 🧽 Save the napkins and face cleaning for the end of the meal and clean up baby out of the high chair. Removing them before clean up minimizes negative experiences during mealtimes!
