โ€œI chose a career in ABA because I have always wanted to help people but wasnโ€™t sure in which way I would. When I started to work with young kids in daycares, I knew right away that I wanted to continue working with children but make more of an impact. I think a career in this field is so rewarding, especially when you can see how much progress a child is making and becoming more independent.โ€ โ€“ Sarah S.

At Aspire Child & Family Services, every team member brings this same passion and dedication working alongside children with autism and related diagnoses to celebrate progress, encourage independence, and create brighter futures.

Costumes are fun but they can also be tricky for kids with sensory sensitivities. Here are some parent-friendly tips to keep Halloween comfortable and stress-free:

๐ŸŽƒ Prioritize Comfort: Choose soft fabrics and tag-free clothing. Sometimes pajamas or a favorite outfit with themed accessories work best!

๐ŸŽƒ Try It Early: Have your child practice wearing their costume days before Halloween so it feels familiar.

๐ŸŽƒ Keep It Simple: Avoid masks, face paint, or bulky pieces if they cause discomfort. A themed t-shirt, cape, or headband can still feel festive.

๐ŸŽƒ Offer Choices: Let your child help decide between two or three options. Having control makes the costume more exciting and less stressful.

๐ŸŽƒ Pack a Backup: Bring an extra set of comfy clothes in case your child wants to change mid-celebration.

๐Ÿ’ก Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy Tip: Use positive reinforcement (praise, high fives, or a small reward) when your child tries on their costume or wears it longer each time. Small steps can make the big night more enjoyable!

Fall festivals, costumes, and trick-or-treating can be exciting but for children with autism and related diagnoses, they can also feel overwhelming. Using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) strategies, you can help your child navigate the holiday with confidence and joy.

Tips for a successful Halloween:

- Practice at home: Let your child try on costumes, explore face paint or masks, and role-play trick-or-treat scenarios.

- Gradual exposure: Introduce new sights, sounds, and textures slowly like handling pumpkins, walking past decorated houses, or hearing doorbells.

- Visual supports: Use picture schedules or social stories to show the steps of the night, from putting on a costume to collecting treats.

- Positive reinforcement: Praise or reward your child for trying new experiences, staying calm, or following routines.

- Sensory considerations: Bring noise-canceling headphones, a familiar toy, or a break spot if your child becomes overwhelmed.

The Aspire Child & Family Services team uses ABA techniques including practice, repetition, modeling, and positive reinforcement to help children build skills, confidence, and independence in real-world situations, including fun and sometimes challenging events like Halloween!
