A lot of people don't know what fascia is. It is the thin white layer under the skin that helps the skin glide over the muscles and bend without cracking. If you ever pulled back chicken skin off a piece of meat and looked under the skin and saw a white slimy film and thought it was fat, it's actually the fascia.

The most common inflammation of the fascia is under the foot, called plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is caused by strain or repetitive stress on the plantar fascia (the tissue connecting heel to toes), leading to inflammation, often from factors like sudden activity increases, prolonged standing on hard surfaces, tight calf muscles, obesity, poor footwear, high arches, or flat feet, with pain peaking in the morning. It's an overuse injury where the fascia gets micro-tears from increased tension, making the first steps of the day most painful as the tissue tightens overnight.

The fibers and flesh tear and injuries occur a lot easier when you are dehydrated, so stay hydrated! And take time to stretch and get massages. It matters.

This is a genuine photograph that was taken in the early 1900s by Dr. Allan Warner of the Isolation Hospital at Leicester in the UK. He would take pictures of small pox patients while studying the disease.

The original caption for this photo:
The two boys, both aged 13 years. The one on the right was vaccinated in infancy, the other was not vaccinated. They were both infected from the same source on the same day. Note that while the one on the left is in the fully pustular stage, the one on the right has had only two spots, which have aborted and have already scabbed.

While there is no definite cure for Fibromyalgia, massage therapy can alleviate the pain. Guide your therapist in what pressure works for you. For some, very light pressure works, while others can only handle deeper pressure, and for others a combination of both in various areas. Use your voice, because your therapist does not know your pain tolerance levels, especially if it's different in different areas of your body.

There have been countless times I have clients ask for a face massage because they "have TMJ." TMJ is the acronym for the Temporomandibular Joint. We all have this joint. It is where the Temple and Mandible meet to create the joint that helps you open and close your mouth. When you have a dysfunction at your Temporomandibular Joint, you have Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD).
