Elevated side lying is best for newborns!

Forget propping a floppy baby upright and taking the bottle away to "pace" them. Let them pace themselves with this option instead.

Let us know in the comments what you can spot that would make it easier for them to switch between nursing and bottle feeding!

You probably don't have elastic ni***es.

If you have hypermobility other places in your body, then you might. If not, you haven't found the right size yet. Yes, even if your LC sized you. Yes, even if you bought a sizing kit online. Yes, even if you're not having pain while pumping.

Conditions like EDS/hEDS do have to be handled differently during lactation. The typical techniques don't work and we have to pull out some different tools.

Send this to a pumping friend!

You probably already know suckling comforts babies. It can reduce pain whether baby is actively eating or not. However, most parents are surprised when we tell them that simply smelling your milk is also pain reducing!

What does this mean?
🧑‍🍼Your baby doesn’t have to be able to nurse to get this benefit.
❤️This is ANOTHER way your body does so much for baby without even having to think about it. You do so much more than you realize.
💉Baby needs a procedure, maybe in the NICU? You can provide some pain relief even if you aren’t able to be there.

Found this helpful? Let us know in the comments! Don’t forget to tag your friend who needs a reminder that they’re amazing.❤️

Despite a history of being forced to wet nurse the white babies of slave owners while their own babies were denied access to human milk, losing that generational lactation knowledge through these horrific practices and family separation, a lack of access to Black IBCLCs and community breastfeeding support, systemic racism in the healthcare system, and being more likely to be offered formula in the hospital than white parents, Black parents today are reclaiming breastfeeding as an “act of resistance” according to
Reshaping the picture of Black lactation in what is truly a life or death issue, Black lactation professionals are showing up and reclaiming the right to provide human milk to Black babies. Please read post below and follow them if you haven’t already!

Daycare or childcare provider keeps asking for more and more milk? Running through your freezer stash? Let’s check on a few things:

1. About how long does it take for baby to finish the bottle? If they’re chugging down 4/+ oz in less than 10 minutes, they might be overeating without enough time to notice they are full.
2. How long of a timeframe is baby being cared for by someone else? Rule of thumb is 1-1.25 hours of milk for every hour in between feedings. If baby is eating about every 2 hours, that’d be 2-2.5 oz and about 8-10 oz for an 8 hour period of time. *Sometimes we see a little higher volumes if they are sleeping way longer than expected, but it isn’t the norm.
3. Are you sending too big of bottles? Daycares, Nannies, anyone with a brain knows you worked hard for that milk and doesn’t want to waste it. Did you know they sometimes have to follow rules on how long milk is good for that are much more strict than typical? Even if baby is full after 2-3 oz from their 5oz bottle, a caregiver may feel pressure to get them to finish the bottle anyways.
4. Grandparents love feeding their grandbabies, even when they aren’t babies anymore. Sometimes they want to feed them really often, more often than the baby is actually hungry for. It doesn’t have to be bad since we do know babies nurse for comfort as well as for nutrition, but we know babies will take smaller volumes when this happens! Sometimes that looks like 2 oz every 1.75 - 2 hours.

These are just a few reasons we commonly see people go through their freezer stash too quickly or worry their supply isn’t keeping up with baby anymore. We always check these areas when working with clients and it’s more common that we see babies simply being overfed than it is for us to see that milk supply is truly low. Hope this helps!

Lá Fhéile Bríde Sona Duit to those who are celebrating! Today is Imbolc, or St. Brigid's Day as it's celebrated in Ireland.

The patron saint of milk, dairy, midwives, and babies brought a message of healing, equality, reproductive justice, and care for the earth and is an important one to remember today. Imbolc marks the beginning of Spring and regrowth, the first milk from the sheep, and the end of the darkest weeks of the year.

Anyone who tells you these are real is probably trying to sell you a program.

The ENTIRE body of infant research that exists shows the opposite. Feeding on cue based on your baby's individual needs (including overnight) and responding to your baby's needs every time is important for growth, development, and future independence.

It's still possible to get a restful night's sleep AND respond to your baby. We have a whole Sleep Highlight with tips.

Don't let anyone gaslight you.

If your weight was good but you were throwing up and in pain constantly or only pooped once a week, it wouldn't feel great if your provider ignored all your symptoms.

Babies can't talk so we have to look for other signs that they're having a hard time. We've spent years studying the earliest signs of feeding struggles so we can intervene early, before things get bad.

We have examples of feeding compensations in our Tongue Tie highlight. Follow and check them out!

January 27th is World Pumping Day!

Whether you pump now and then to give a bottle or you pump exclusively, pumping is a labor of love for your baby. The gift of human milk is priceless, and you love your baby THAT MUCH, to be willing to spend the time and effort expressing milk for them.

Every drop you pump is a real-life representation of the love you have for your baby. You're doing amazing!

Send to a pumping friend to let them know they're doing a great job.
