Fall sports are back, but so is the heat. β˜€οΈπŸˆ

Tom Belmaggio, director of the Marshall Sports Medicine Institute, shares what every student-athlete, coach, and parent should know: πŸ’ͺπŸ’§

πŸ₯€ Make sure you drink plenty of fluids before practice or competition. Pre-hydrate β€” don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Drink 20 oz. of water or an electrolyte beverage in the 2 hours before practice, and keep sipping throughout.

πŸ‹ Urine check: Light yellow = good. Dark yellow (like apple juice) = hydrate ASAP!

🌑️ Ease into the heat. Coaches should allow time to acclimate and monitor temps with a WBGT device to adjust practices safely.

πŸ₯΅ Watch for heat exhaustion: pale skin, cramps, fatigue, rapid pulse. Cool down fast β€” shade, cold water, or ice β€” and sip fluids slowly.

πŸš‘ Heat stroke is serious. If symptoms worsen or the athlete becomes unresponsive, call 911 and keep cooling the body.

πŸ‰ Pro tip: A few salted watermelon slices = hydration + electrolytes (but not too much!).

πŸ₯— Eat smart. Light carbs + lean protein 1–2 hours before practice = better hydration and performance.

Stay cool, stay ready. Let’s keep our athletes safe this season. πŸ’š
