Unfiltered: Body Image & Mental Health is a new group for adolescent girls ages 13-17 struggling with body image, self-esteem, and confidence. This group will educate young girls on the effect body image has on mental health, as well as providing them with ways to build a better relationship with themselves. Together, we’ll explore how social media, comparisons, and self-talk impact the way we see ourselves, and how to grow from it. Through guided discussions and interactive activities, girls will connect with peers who share similar experiences in a supportive, therapeutic environment.

Body Dysmorphia presents differently in various individuals. The common thread is an overwhelming preoccupation with a particular physical characteristic. Friends and family may not perceive these issues, but for those afflicted, they are prominent concerns. The examples listed represent just a few instances, as the disorder's effects vary greatly from person to person.

Often times people affected look for ways to correct this "imperfection " through surgery and other means. However, even after doing those procedures they continue to obsess over the same imperfection that others don't even notice. As you can see this can have a large impact on their social, education, and work functioning. Psychotherapy such as Exposure Response Prevention and Acceptance Commitment Therapy has been beneficial in these cases.

When we say we're beyond excited for this event, we mean it. This has been a long-awaited initiative for Balance MHC, and we're so excited to finally bring it to fruition. Some of you might recall our first "Balancing Motherhood" event hosted at the Huntington Library in 2018.

This year, we are proud to collaborate with the Huntington Library, the Suffolk County Department of Health, and the Office of Minority Health. With the wonderful support of our Huntington community, we are bringing families together to provide valuable information on baby care, postpartum care, perinatal mental health, and various community resources, all in one event. This truly is a dream come true.

Please share with all families in the community. This is an event you won't want to miss out as an expecting parent.

We need to acknowledge our community supporters and sponsors:

Town of Huntington providing baby essentials and donations

Fidelis care for providing goodies and baby raffles

Catalina's for providing sweets treats and empanadas for the event

Northwell Health Huntington midwife and STARS Rehab for offering education on maternity care and pelvic floor

and Beli for baby items

for the car safety demonstration

For being our star Pediatrician for the night
