💚 We remember Dr. Paul Ambrose.

One of Huntington’s own.
A Marshall graduate.
A healer.
A life taken far too soon on September 11th.

Paul devoted his life to helping our nation grow healthier — leading efforts to improve diet and exercise habits across the country.

That mission did not end that day.
Every mile walked.
Every bike turned.
Every step on the Paul Ambrose Trail for Health carries his legacy forward.

As we remember the lives lost on 9/11, we remember Paul — and we honor him by living the healthy, hopeful future he believed in. 💚

The West Virginia Division of Highways has awarded the City of Huntington an $815,000 grant for the construction of an extension of the Paul Ambrose Trail for Health (PATH) along Washington Boulevard from Hal Greer Boulevard to Spring Hill Cemetery.

The grant was one of 36 awarded last week by the Division of Highways through the Transportation Alternatives and Recreational Trails Program, which helps cities and towns develop and enhance sidewalks, lighting, walking paths, rail trails and more. The City of Huntington will provide a $204,000 match, bringing the funding available for the project to $1,019,000.

“This improvement is part of a larger plan to connect the non-contiguous portions of the PATH throughout the city and is designed to cultivate greater recreational access of the PATH in the Southeast Hills neighborhood of Huntington,” Mayor Steve Williams said.

The PATH extension will run parallel to Washington Boulevard beginning at the western intersection of Military Road and Washington Boulevard and continue to the intersection at Woodland Drive.

Work will involve improving the existing asphalt path with safety, accessibility and mobility accommodations; creating a new shared-use cycling and pedestrian trail along the road that connects to the existing trail north of Washington Boulevard; and improving PATH intersections of Glenwood Road, Military Road and Holswade Drive to better protect motorized and non-motorized users from collisions.

Approximately 3,000 lives were taken 23 years ago today in the 9/11 attacks. One of those was a promising young physician from Huntington named Dr. Paul Ambrose.

Paul had devoted his life's work to improving our nation’s health and fighting obesity. He received his medical degree from Marshall University, and his work in public health spanned throughout the country, bringing him to work closely with the Surgeon General to combat the obesity epidemic. His work brought about initiatives to improving diet and exercise habits across the country.

In 2008, to honor his memory, it was decided Paul would be the namesake of a local trail system known as the Paul Ambrose Trail for Health. PATH has provided Huntington residents with healthy recreational and alternative transportation opportunities as well as hosting local events aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles.

Today we remember Dr. Paul Ambrose. His passion to influence healthy lifestyles and his spirit live on through the trail system our community utilizes every day for their health and well-being.

The City of Huntington on Friday, Feb. 2, was one of 58 communities nationwide to receive a Bicycle Friendly Community award from the League of American Bicyclists.

Huntington was awarded with a Bronze-level status, its highest-ever ranking in the League’s report card. Huntington previously was recognized with Honorable Mention awards in 2012 and 2015.

“We are committed to ensuring our streets and parks are safe for bicyclists and pedestrians, and this recognition is a testament to those efforts,” Mayor Steve Williams said. “We also remain committed to always finding ways to improve our quality of life. Next to safe neighborhoods, being recognized as a bicycle friendly community is tops on our list.”

"This award gives Huntington much-deserved public recognition for its commitment to create safer and more equitable spaces for bicyclists,” added Zane Parsley, chairman of the Huntington Mayor’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee. “It's great to see other organizations taking note of our incredible community. We applaud the determination of our city leadership in making this happen and look forward to continuing to work alongside them to improve our streets and parks for cyclists."

Bicycle Friendly Community awards reflect local leaders’ ongoing work to build better places to bike and evaluate those efforts as part of a national movement. Each of the five levels of the Bicycle Friendly Community award – diamond, platinum, gold, silver, and bronze, plus an honorable mention category – provide a clear path for cities and towns to continuously improve.

A Bicycle Friendly Community award at any level isn’t meant to be a one-and-done achievement – it’s a legitimate inquiry into the community’s commitment to better biking over time. The League’s goal is to reflect the best practices in the field, and it encourages communities to continue reapplying over time to stay accountable to their action plan and to maintain their award level. Bicycle Friendly Community awards are only retained for four years. A community then must reapply for designation.

The City of Huntington and Huntington Stormwater Utility are trialing a pilot maintenance strategy for the PATH. This includes using a brine spray application on the trail to try to control w**d growth in the West Huntington/Westmoreland sections of the Levee Trail and the Guyandotte Trail.

Depending on weather, the brine spray can be applied once every month or two in the growing season. The application does appear to deter w**d growth but on a short-term basis.

Staff is considering other techniques to increase the productiveness of this method. This is a continuation of the maintenance program that began last year. The program has included the replacement of broken railings, painting of existing railings and widening the trail width with new gravel.
