Patient Impact Story: Elsie

"Being unexpectedly thrown into the world of childhood cancer is terrifying. Tests, hospital stays, treatment, unknown outcomes. It's scary for parents and children alike. It would have been easy for our experience to be nothing but negative, but the Child Life team at Hoops Family Children's Hospital made sure our experience was as joy filled and fun as it possibly could be. From providing distraction during difficult tests, to helping explain in kid-language what was happening, to bringing fun and laughter into the hospital room, to supporting our whole family through the most difficult year and a half of our lives, the Child Life team made the hospital a place that brought comfort along with healing instead of only anxiety.

Carleigh became one of Elsie's best friends throughout treatment. She brought laughter and music and fun into our room even when Elsie was not feeling well. As Elsie continues to have follow-up testing, she looks forward to Carleigh reading to her during scans instead of dreading scans like she did at first. I cannot imagine walking through childhood cancer without the Child Life team. They make such a difference."

Child Life Month Spotlight: Stephanie Cape, CCLS - certified child life specialist

🫶 Why Child Life?
"I spent a lot of time in the hospital as a child. When I was young, I always said that I wanted to be the 'nice doctor' that told kids what was going on. I was in college the first time I heard about child life and I knew right away that this was the career for me."

🧰 Favorite coping tool to teach?
"Re-focusing the mind. I like to teach kids the power of distraction. I help them to acknowledge what they are experiencing (pain, anxiety, discomfort, etc.) and then empower them to focus their mind on a positive distraction. Re-focusing the mind splits the brains attention from their pain, anxiety, or discomfort, allowing for a reduction in those sensations. This is an important skill, because it is versatile, meaning that it can be applied to multiple situations, not just to the current stressor. It is a go to for me because it often requires coaching at first, but can be done independently with practice. This allows me to provide that support while I am there, but ultimately gives them the power to support themselves when I cannot be present."

💚 Favorite patient moment?
"One of my favorite moments involved a school-aged patient who needed an MRI and had been told she couldn’t eat until it was completed with sedation. Since there was a chance sedation might not be available that day, I worked with the care team to see if we could prepare her to try the MRI without it. Using a mini MRI model, we practiced what the experience would be like through play and talked about the sounds she would hear. By the time it was time for the scan, she felt confident and excited — and she successfully completed the MRI without sedation and was able to go home that evening."

✨ Fun fact
"I have a 19 year old son, 4 cats, and 2 dogs. They are my world."

🎵 What they do
Child Life coordinator and board certified music therapist

🎸 Favorite bedside instrument
"My go-to instrument at the bedside is the ukulele. It’s small enough to fit almost anywhere in the hospital, easy to carry around the units, and incredibly versatile. I can go from lullabies for babies to Disney songs, pop songs, or songwriting sessions with patients without missing a beat."

💚 Favorite patient moment
"One of my favorite moments happened in the outpatient hematology/oncology infusion center when a patient and her little sister asked to sing “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto. She sang every single voice in the song and absolutely owned it while I was just there as backup on the guitar. I hadn’t seen that girl smile that big in a long time, and for a few minutes the infusion center turned into a full Disney performance. While we were singing, the nurse was even able to change the patient’s IV medications without her noticing or becoming anxious."

✨ Fun fact
"Outside of work I have three dogs who keep life interesting, and I love anything creative—painting, decorating, and making colorful things. I’m also a huge math nerd and genuinely enjoy math problems. Music and math are closely connected through rhythm, patterns, and structure, so in a way my two favorite things make perfect sense together. My husband and I also love to travel and will happily drive all over for concerts, especially older country artists."

The Hoops Family Children's Hospital Child Advocacy Center (CAC) joined the West Virginia Child Advocacy Network at the West Virginia Capitol for Child Advocacy Day.

The CAC served 313 new children in 2025, with 70% there because of sexual abuse allegations.
