What if we considered avoiding popular phrases like “girl drama” and “boys will be boys?”

These sayings can unintentionally shut down conversations and reinforce outdated ideas about how kids “should” behave.

Instead, small changes in how we talk to (and about) kids can make a big difference. Read some takeaways on this subject from Youth First Mental Health Professional Amy Back, MSW, LSW: https://youthfirstinc.org/the-real-cost-of-saying-girl-drama-and-boys-will-be-boys/

🌿 Welcome to the Herd, Allyson Bellomy!🌿

The Marshall University Counseling Center is excited to welcome our new therapist, Allyson Bellomy, to the Herd counseling team!

Allyson is an Eastern Kentucky University alumna, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. After completing her practicum and internship in the area, Allyson obtained her provisional counseling license in West Virginia—and brings with her a strong appreciation for the importance of serving the Appalachian community.

In her work, Allyson uses an integrative, person-centered approach, partnering with students to help them find the therapeutic style and support that best fits their individual needs.

Outside the office, you’ll often find Allyson traveling, spending time with her two dogs, or curled up with a good book**. 📚🐾✈️

We’re thrilled to have her join us in supporting student wellbeing—welcome to MUCC, Allyson! 💚

Dr. King’s message continues to inspire reflection on how we meet hardship with purpose. Moments of struggle often present us with a choice — to turn inward in bitterness, or to transform pain into something meaningful and life‑giving.

At the Marshall University Counseling Center, we believe growth can emerge even from difficulty. Whether through reaching out for support, finding connection, or creating change in your community, transformation often begins with the decision to face suffering with compassion and intention.

This week, as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, may we carry forward his reminder that hope and creativity can rise from the challenges we endure.

If you’re navigating difficulty, know that you don’t have to do it alone—MUCC is here to support you.

Welcome to the Herd Counseling team, Erin! 💚

MUCC is excited to introduce one of our newest therapists, **Erin** Wheeler, LISW, who joins us from the small town of Portsmouth, Ohio. Erin earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 2019 and her Master of Social Work (MSW) in 2021, and she is independently licensed as a Social Worker (LISW) in Ohio while actively working toward her West Virginia licensure.

Erin believes everyone deserves to be heard, understood, and loved, and she brings this value into her work through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness techniques, and Person-Centered Therapy. She is passionate about empowering students to reach their full potential, improve their well-being, and create meaningful, lasting change in their lives.

Outside of the counseling room, Erin enjoys spending time outdoors with family and friends, relaxing with her two beloved dogs, reading new books, and exploring her creative side through crafting.

Please help us give Erin a warm Thundering Herd welcome in the comments as she begins her journey with our MUCC community! 🐾💚

The Marshall University Counseling Center honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, as our campus community observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 19, 2026.

Today, we pause to remember Dr. King’s unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and the power of nonviolent change. His work reminds us that caring for our communities also means caring for our own well-being, so we can continue the work of building a more just and compassionate world.

As you move through this day, consider:
- Taking a moment to reflect on how you can show up for others with empathy, courage, and respect in your daily life.
- Engaging in learning, service, or meaningful dialogue that honors Dr. King’s dream on campus and beyond.

If this day brings up complex emotions or you simply need someone to talk to, the Counseling Center is here for you during regular business hours this week. Please reach out to connect with support and remember you do not have to navigate things alone.
