Influenza (also known as “flu”) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses.
Flu can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Flu symptoms usually come on suddenly. People who have flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms:
* fever or feeling feverish/chills
* cough
* sore throat
* runny or stuffy nose
* muscle or body aches
* headaches
* fatigue (tiredness)
* some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
*It's important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.
You should see a doctor for the flu if you're in a high-risk group (young kids, 65+, pregnant, chronic conditions) or experience severe signs like difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, dizziness, severe vomiting, or symptoms that improve then return worse; otherwise, rest, fluids, and OTC meds often suffice for healthy adults. Seek immediate emergency care for signs like blue lips, seizures, or severe dehydration.
