What is medically supervised weight loss?

Medically supervised weight loss involves working with a dietitian, weight loss professional, or doctor to evaluate:

Everyday habits
Typical nutritional intake
Eating patterns and behaviors

The dietitian becomes your coach, helps you build a personalized weight loss goal, and then walks you through your journey to reach it.

Could medically supervised weight loss be the key to keeping your New Year's resolutions for 2026? Huntsville Weight Loss can help!

"In 2023, I was in the worst health and was over 100 pounds overweight. I knew that I had to make a change and quickly! At the recommendation of friends who had experienced success with a gastric sleeve procedure, I made an appointment with Dr. Boyett to gain a better understanding.

What I appreciated most was that he presented me with the facts, the success and failure rates, and encouraged me to think about it before making a decision. After discussing it with my family, it affirmed that this was the life-changing route I wanted to go. I felt like this would set me up to be the most successful in my health journey.

My sleeve surgery has been the best decision I've made for my health and wellness. Many will say that having bariatric surgery is "the easy way out" or "that's cheating", but it's important to remember that the surgery alone is not what makes one successful in losing the weight. It is merely a tool and post-surgery is when all the hard work happens. Throughout my weight loss, I was diligent in following the nutrition plan and never missed an appointment with the nutritionist. (I love that one is provided through Dr. Boyett's office!).

I am now two years post-op and have been maintaining a 112 pound weight loss for over a year now, and my most recent bloodwork shows that all of my numbers are perfect! I make a point to be active, and although I am able to eat most foods, I continue to follow a healthy eating style in order to maintain my weight. I have never felt better physically, and I love having a closet full of clothes that fit me!"

Weight Loss Surgery: A Permanent Solution?

Weight loss surgeries, including gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and lap band surgery, have been widely used for decades, providing an effective and often permanent solution to obesity. These procedures change the digestive system to help reduce the amount of food intake, leading to dramatic and sustained weight loss for most patients.

Pros of Weight Loss Surgery
Significant and Sustained Weight Loss
Weight loss surgeries offer a more permanent solution, with most patients losing 50–70% of their excess weight within the first 12–18 months. The weight loss is often maintained over the long term with proper lifestyle adjustments.

Resolution of Comorbidities
Many patients experience resolution or significant improvement in obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea, sometimes even immediately post-surgery.

Proven Long-Term Safety and Efficacy
Weight loss surgeries have been studied extensively over several decades, providing substantial data on long-term outcomes and potential complications, giving patients and healthcare providers a better understanding of what to expect.

Reduced Hunger Hormones
Certain procedures, like the gastric sleeve, reduce hunger hormones, helping patients manage cravings more effectively, which can make long-term weight management easier.

Cons of Weight Loss Surgery
Surgical Risks and Complications
As with any surgery, there are inherent risks, including infection, blood clots, and anesthesia-related complications. Additionally, there are potential long-term issues like malabsorption, nutrient deficiencies, and even the need for revision surgeries.

Lifestyle Changes and Restrictions
Post-surgery, patients need to follow strict dietary and lifestyle changes, including smaller portions and avoiding certain foods, to avoid complications like dumping syndrome. Adapting to these changes can be challenging for some individuals.

Extended Recovery Time
Depending on the type of surgery, recovery time can range from a few weeks to a few months. This may impact work and personal life, which can be a drawback for those with limited time for recovery.

Cost and Insurance Nuances
While most insurance plans cover weight loss surgery, out-of-pocket expenses can still be significant, particularly if there are complications requiring additional care.

Considering weight loss surgery or exploring less invasive options?

An upper endoscopy is a simple, nonsurgical procedure that allows your doctor to examine the esophagus, stomach, and upper small intestine. It’s often an important step before bariatric surgery and is now also used in newer, non-surgical weight loss procedures.

Some of these endoscopic weight loss options include:

Gastric Balloon – A balloon is placed in the stomach to help you feel full and eat less.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastropexy – The stomach is reshaped from the inside to reduce its size and limit food intake.

Gastric Bypass Revision – Helps correct stretching in previous gastric bypass procedures by reducing the pouch size and tightening the connection to the intestine.
