This graphic shows a pyramid representing the Hierarchy of Needs, based on the psychological theories of Abraham Maslow. Maslow saw human needs as progressing through five tiers, where it becomes difficult to focus on higher-level tasks when foundational needs are not met. While the hierarchy is theoretical, it can still offer a helpful framework for giving ourselves grace and identifying which needs to prioritize, especially when we’re feeling overwhelmed or struggling with executive functioning.
The hierarchy has five levels:
1. Physiological - basic physical needs such as food water, shelter, sleep
2. Safety - security needs relating to health, finances, and environment
3. Social - love and belonging with friends, family, community
4. Esteem - self respect, achievement, recognition, feeling of personal uniqueness
5. Self Actualization - pursuit of meaning, creativity, personal growth, purpose.
