Karl was originally diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder in 2017 however since that time his health has hit many hurdles with long term system chronic illness over top of anything that made him bed bound. He has had an innumerable amount of seizures which have greatly effected his life and future. Many of you know Karl as a worship leader and at the He has not been able to speak with any intelligibility for the last 4 plus years. He needs your support, prayers and love.

𝟲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 : 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲⁣
Since February 10th, it’s been quite a few months since I have given any substantial update health as well specifically my teeth & oral surgery situation.Sometimes the waiting can be extremely slow at times, but then everything happens rapidly at once; for instance, we had to wait five months just to get my advanced hospital dentistry pre evaluation for a combination oral surgery.⁣
⁣
This will be an official important 6 month health update : Concerning teeth & iron deficiency Therefore it will be shared within my Karl’s Journey To Heal FB / IG as well as my personal public profile Karl Bowdle here. My goal is for me to communicate to as many people in as concise a manner as is possible. (This is NOT a request for anything financial but access & accessibility most of all Prayer 🙏🏼)⁣

𝟳/𝟵-𝟭𝟬/𝟮𝟬𝟮4⁣
We were blessed to have wheelchair transportation van rental available for our trip, but unforeseen circumstances prevented us from arriving at our first appointment on time. However, we were graciously offered a rescheduled appointment for the next morning, and we were able to find a comfortable hotel enroute for the night. We were grateful for God's guidance, provision and loving care in both instances.⁣
⁣
Unfortunately, I was unable to get my mouth wide enough on my own for the clinical advanced dentistry evaluation so they used cheek extenders , which were able to open my mouth just enough for examination. When they were conducting the evaluation and made significant progress before the x-ray, during which I experienced facial spasms that prevented the scan from being completed. ⁣This happened even without any vibration, just pulling on and prodding teeth, stimulated the nerve, causing my face to contort in spasms. However, the contortion & spasms in my face were shorter than usual, although the advanced dentistry doctors informed me that we would need to try x rays another day. ⁣
⁣
When they did the clinical evaluation they found about what I expected them to, just I didn’t expect the progression to be what they found. There will be multiple extractions, multiple fillings, multiple filings & drilling & milling, There is also many chipped teeth. Lowest amount of extractions is 2 with the higher amount between 2-4.⁣ There was no active abscess, but the damage from the abscesses has left no other option than extractions. This would be in correlation to saying in weather there is no more storm but there is a great damage left in the aftermath of the storm.⁣

In total so far at least from direct clinical evaluation is 8-10 issues. Complicating factors are going to be that to get surgery I will have to go through a second oral surgeon have the X ray on the same day in a different place from the surgery evaluation and then after that surgery which could require another hotel reservation. The soonest they could give us for that second oral surgery evaluation is within the coming days.⁣

𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀⁣

My hopes are that the central nervous system can be muted enough before and after. I have been under anesthesia to many times within the last eight years, however some times worked without being seizures coming out of anesthesia. This time however with multiple teeth being removed and worked on from drilling to filling to repairing⁣. The time that has past since the severity of the teeth was escalated, plus multiple trips before surgery have not only had there progressive effects on my teeth, but on our endurance and recovery time in a vast amount of ways after each trip⁣

𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 ⁣
Furthermore, any further dentistry beyond this will also will require sedation. Seizures may still occur even while coming out of oral surgery. I have been told, if what occurred last August (with being unresponsive for eight hours & seizures for my SPC surgery) that they will just take me to recovery or transport me to ER (if bad enough to an overnight post operation monitoring.) I still have some significant concerns even after surgery concerning my severe dry mouth which has expedited the level of issues in my gums & teeth. ⁣
⁣
𝗙𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱⁣
Accessible wheelchair ♿️ transport has Lord willing been provided but not easy to come by. In the days that will follow this next stage (final oral surgery eval) the wheelchair vans that we rent are not available . We will need to actually have tag team that day before we leave the eval and gather when is surgery that day. This has been a very long 6 months. We have gotten this far and with God has showed forth his faithfulness with the simple the complex & the trials Within the next couple days we hope to have more clarity. The cost in total of all the trips both physically⁣

𝗜𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗔𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮⁣
So the second part of this update is that due to complications that I shared occur after my surgery last August and following , I’ve had progressive chronic blood loss. We know of three places directly but the other could be GI. Finding the bleed will take a further search after oral surgery. As a result of this blood loss, we watched over time my iron get lower specifically my ferritin which is stored iron in the blood. The number plus the results of my blood tests led to me needing an iron infusion for iron deficiency anemia. I have had Vitamin D Deficiency, Vitamin B Deficiency, Muscle Protein Deficiency but this was a watched for six months to see the trend and it was clear. So I went to my hematologist and he said that my number was extremely low and I needed to get you an infusion the following week. ⁣
⁣
Thankfully, I did not have to have a blood transfusion but if there was to be some odd side effects, I definitely got one rare one. The infusion activated about a week ago as we were told it would.i await other tests to see how much it raised.. We tried other methods to get my iron up including iron supplements but they were not effective. Having the iron infusion before the upcoming oral surgery is also a blessing because having my iron as low as it was they may not have been able to do the surgery without it and it being active in the body. . ⁣
⁣
𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿⁣
Pray specifically for the timeline that we would be able to get the oral surgery I need within the next couple weeks if not sooner with access to rent the wheelchair van to before the month is over and the teeth situation gets worse. Pray what can only be done under anesthesia or twilight a modified version of anesthesia. My dentist recommends that every filling refilling should be done with the extraction root canal crown or to capitalize on the trip given for as long as they think safe to have me under.⁣

In April of last year, my present dentist found some cavities & some existing fillings that needed attention but not yet urgent or emergent. Given that my mouth open barely open a thumbs width at my teeth : both the x-Ray & the teeth cleaning was extremely difficult for them. (Also trying not to trigger a nerve into facial spasms or worse that day. He informed me that at the time that due to my complex medical history specifically facial spasms and in general my seizures that his facility was general & not equipped for that level of emergency and that I needed to go to a well equipped facility willing to take on my case. Just FYI no local oral surgeon has been willing to accept my case as well. Since ⁣
⁣
𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 ⁣
Last year. my health situation reached one of the most difficult seasons of my journey. Many of you know I had to have an urgent surgery to insert a medical device into my stomach. Directly after going through surgery & coming out of the anesthesia : I was unresponsive for about 3 hours, then came to for about a half hour, went diaphoretic & seized again for the next five hours. There were very few moments where I went The total amount of time unresponsive & seizing that day was 8 hours. It is more than likely this was the longest seizure event I’ve had in all my years since seizures began in 2008. This is important to understand to give context.⁣
⁣
𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁⁣

𝗛𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀⁣
Due to the complications from my SPC surgery plus the condition I was in within the 4 months prior to surgery, we were not able to do any in person consult & definitely no surgery. This would have been with the same Oral Surgeon who had taken my case in 2017. I also tried trying to get the referral needed through neurology dept but that had not been able to happen yet⁣
⁣
𝟬𝟭/𝟯𝟭/𝟬𝟮𝟰⁣
I noticed a severe pain in my tooth & face as well as spread to my jaw early in the morning from a I took a picture of the tooth and it looked dead. We asked for the soonest appointment I could get ; to have the severity looked at and explain a timeline. This has also complicated what I can eat.⁣
⁣
𝟬𝟮/𝟬𝟴/𝟮𝟰⁣
So this gets us to the emergency appointment we had with my dentist. The soonest we were able to see him was one week from the beginning of the pain. Once finally able to see the dentist, he was able to look at the damage, tell me how long I had before it gets even worse and then explain the complexity.⁣
⁣
He explained that there was a cavity on one side of the tooth and filling on the other, the filling broke down and within the tooth connected to the cavity causing an abscess filling almost all of the tooth up to the nerve. My dentist said the nerve is estimated to die within the next month but the abcess to grow even more even with the second round of antibiotics. He also explained that after that I might not feel the direct pain anymore, but the tooth and the situation will be far worse. ⁣
⁣
𝗦𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ⁣
So here Is the situation, right now there are at least two trips that must be taken as my dentist has integral connections to the place I need to go. One of those, if not two, will require hotel stay or possible Right now if they were to call Monday and say that we have a consult and surgery day for you. My parents and I have no ability to get there. A regular van won’t work because I have a power chair that weighs by itself 360 lbs, with my personal weight of 240 lbs this is a combined weight of 600 lbs.⁣
⁣
𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ⁣𝗦𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
We don’t have our own wheelchair accessible van. We had hoped to get one in the future, but health has been more important. For local trips, I use a wheelchair transport van, through a special company for those who are elderly or disabledThey cannot make a two hour trip for cost reasons and they are short staffed (so that one trip would cost then other trips.) Any of insurance transportation through my insurance/ Medicare falls outside of the range of limits.⁣
⁣
We normally rent a wheelchair accessible van for these extended medical trips through Mobility Works however that has to be planned months in advance. We have the same van reserved for April on a night for an event. Rentals on this van are on a first come first serve basis there is high demand.⁣
⁣
𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿⁣
Pray specifically for the timeline that we would be able to get the consult & surgery before the month is over and the abscess gets even worse. Pray for the call & access for a wheelchair accessible van to use. Pray what can only be done under anesthesia or twilight a modified version of anesthesia. Here is my ask of you. Do you know of any one who has a well equipped wheelchair van that is weighted properly similar to Braun Ability with Side or rear entry. It needs to have a ramp and be able to lift preferably by hydraulics or easy lift up, the second part is that it needs the ability to tilt and also the substantial weight to withstand safely the my 360 lb powered wheelchair with me in it at my weight of 240 lbs so in total 600 pounds. ⁣

To preface, the update below that I started this long update days ago but it has kinda gotten lost in a plethora of notes on my phone.

Health Update

It’s hard to believe that it has been just over a month since my second post op hospitalization (and 6 weeks after surgery). Since I last updated and through various groups and messenger praying it has actually been hard to keep up with all. But here are a few a significant updates. My surgery post op complications were not typical for both the incision (that started bleeding profusely) and the medical insertion site were stitches ruptured

I’ve had well over 80+ dressing changes comprised two different wound areas sections that needed healing. The incision was comprised of two holes and a center line with dissolvable stitches in between. The two outer tunneling holes had to be packed two times daily for over a month and the of the site was the cleaned and dressed (in hospital and out of the hospital at home). The math on 80+ changes together with 3 wounds and two sections of wound site. Well that is quite a lot.

As a result of surgery, I lost almost all my functionality & strength of anything that I gained before plus I had no appetite. I was hardly able to eat. Bed mobility & using my overhead trapeze snd any upper arm ability to push was gone, as well as the transfer slide. Part if this stems from the anesthesia, center core and well just overall strength. I can normally transfer on a transfer board with assistance of 1 or 2 people into my electronic powered wheelchair However, after the surgery I also lost tons of my core strength because the the incision holes were such that they were right in the area that directly impacted sitting up, turning the ability to get pressure of my back and backside.

To compound all if the above had pressure issues with skin. As well as some smaller surface wounds from so many bandages a applied and removed post surgery , I did not gave the same skin care regimen so I got something similar to things I have had in the past but more acutely the state right before bedsores on pressure areas or skin already thin. You see I could barely move. Bed mobility wise (transfers Here I am just talking about bed mobility. I have only done one transfer set to my powered electric wheelchair & at the time that took help from 3 people, my mom, dad and a church family friend

I don’t like when I have seizures, blindness, active jerking and spasms could be at at any part of the day… but all that stuff to us, myself and parents (we are used to) Although, to others might seem extremely intense.I have done much better in OT and PT in this part of the year and with assistance my first trial of transfer by sliding disc board, !-2 people and I was able to make the transfer. Thankfully I was

I try not to let situations discourage me but undertaking this surgery & post op complications is probably the most extensive level of my care. Very disheartening and discouraging in many ways. This surgery was a bit more invasive than I thought it would be. We just thought it was going to be a simple laparoscopic guided procedure I was at peace after much prayer and consideration

There are other areas that together compacted for a very difficult 6 weeks plus physically emotionally and spiritually.

Even in the midst of adversity when things get rough God is faithful. Many times I just we might wantto be removed from it but pain does have its purpose. Endurance takes time I think directly of James I have not gotten to the place of joy when trials but I have gotten to endurance. 🙏🏼 by power of the Holy Spirit

Many of you are waiting on God for a miracle. You may not realize since even before God works on his time table not ours. We can easily get discouraged even to the point of despondency and become frustrated/angry at God. It is very easy to say “why did God allow this to happen to me.” It is even easier to say “why me.”

📖 ‭‭Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭26‬-‭28‬ ‭CSB‬‬
“In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.”Note it is “for the good of those who Love God and called according to his purpose. It is about God’s greater glory in and in the plans He has prepared food for us.

I know in many cases there are people that have been praying i walk again, speak again. I did not share except privately that as of January of 2023, I lost all speech.

So, I have been walking through a grieving process of dealing with what is lost and what was gained before. That has been difficult to walk through. I have had wonderful friends and loved ones on that journey be so encouraging. I can share more about my ears and what was found at a later date.

So let’s get to this next part. I will finally have the level of care that i need without being in facility to relieve the burden of my parents. I don’t want to get into all of that publicly but areas of my health in even in last couple weeks has drastically changed.

I will need to have a surgery in August (the fastest they could do) Intervention in the inbetween) This is permanent surgery and in many ways it will change my quality of life. In other ways it will complicate daily care.

When you pray for a miracle you never know what they end result will look like. Sometimes it is immediate. I know i will be healed whether hereon this side of heaven or the finality of healing in heaven. Sometimes it is something you wait a long time for. For anyone that knows my journey this is a long haul for sure. God’s miracles are less about us and more about him. We don’t seek the miracle we seek the miracle maker. Your prayers have been answered in ways you never could imagine.

I may not be able speak, walk, sometimes not be able to see as even in last night, also i now can add hearing loss but the advanced level of care i need is now here.

Over the last many months, i have been silent on issues of health. In many cases it has been that for years was so open about health and the constant updates, did not realize how much time it took out of me. However i realize that many want to know. Maybe because it is a lot to keep up with in day to day at and sometimes I am not able to type fully well.

(I am using swipe to type with my special grip stylus (so there are probably many errors & needs for edits and also my dyslexia.) This took a about a day and a lot out of me but I wanted my words to be fresh.

You might notice many times I use copy and paste. Thanks to my good buddy Matthew Jones for some special apple accessibility shortcuts he made fire me.(once i can get them implemented) it will be easier to communicate in many of the other
ways to lessen the strain on hands

However I cannot leave this day & moment without giving public thanks to GOD. He sees and knows.

(So many people that have been praying for years for break through in this arena. It’s hard to imagine that i have been bed bound / wheelchair ♿️ for 5+ years. I have tried to do all i can on my own from using my trapeze bar to lift my self up and try to do atleast maybe 15 reps a day. Many times if this is done wrong it can hurt me as can just moving forward to much in my wheelchair.

In the last couple months many trials from nearly daily seizures again to bad flares sone pressure issues some not desirable small wounds that took months to heal. But now is the long awaited moment i will post this up to as well.

After 3 years, fighting the medical system. God has provided home health again. From PT, 0T, ST and an evaluator nurse came this morning to get this started. The Nurse was so gracious and even said he would be praying for success. He said i don’t know how far we will get but we will stick with you as we being there should be no issue with cycles of continuance of care. Weekly Skilled Nursing visits for the first couple weeks, a Nurse aide to relieve my mom at-least once a week as well.)

In the middle of August a woman named Angela came to our house for an evaluation from third party working for my insurance company. She stayed with us for about four hours as my parents explained the issues and I communicated through speaker

When i don’t know what some one is going to say in advance it is much harder to communicate back ( This takes an increased amount of patience for all done through speaker. Medical Intakes alone take much longer to process because of this.

We dove deep into me falling through the cracks of the medical system. This is something, that i hope changes for so many people in my situation.She offered hope for me to be put on a special care of my insurance equipped for people just like me that don’t fit the regular plan

Almost 3 years ago I was dismissed rather unprofessionally from a Neurology Dept within a neuro progressive unit. That dismissal in 2019 did not allow due the renewal of the three months of home health care i had at the time. It then took 2 plus years of fighting hard to get another neurologist to even be willing to see me.

This took us to UAB Birmingham Kirklin Clinic where many things began occurring. I have lost count how many appointments from Nov 2021 To March 2022. Now there was traction and some footing. For one, needed appropriate medication for my complex migraines was now given… I now had a neurologist, then two other neurologists that saw me after (one a direct Nerve Conduction Doctor, Then. a specialist.

So this means a total of 21 total neurologist have been involved in my case

For once my case was considered. More tests were done. More pieces to the puzzle found. Deeper Nerve Signal diagnostics found not just clinical but observable abnormalities in nerves in left arm, identifiable but not explainable things in my legs & testing of nerves that went further to back and neck. That had never been done to that extent. Also as well the benign parenchyma pineal cyst which has previously been called a pineal tumor has further been defined

There is Doctor & Neurologist at UAB Spain Rehab. He says he can get me to targeted therapy to help but in most cases i will have to come to Birmingham for it. These trips are hard on mom dad and myself. One day trip 8-12 hour day (recovery is close to a couple weeks. As the frequency of the trip and the duration. 3 day trip takes over a month to recover from. If all of those are clustered together it’s months & months long recovery.Each of these visits also had some pretty intense seizures in couple of appointments .

So the doctor who said he could further move things along was actually in a training for functional neurological disorders in 2017 at Emory while i was there in the neuro epilepsy progressive unit. God has a funny sense of humor. Still non epileptic seizures with no ascertainable origin.

Neuropsychology was the next in the line but here is where things get sidelined if you will. I am in line for a program after my initial intake that will see what care I can receive. It takes two tele-health or in person visits with neuropsychologist as a coordinator of care. I am on a waitlist of 30 people. That sounds seemingly small but this means that they also have the same process so that is coupled the same way as me. We are told in July maybe September or October for visit one.

My next visits for UAB in person had to be scheduled out until 2023. Because of availability and transport.

So now let’s get to the part i will also highlight at the top :

(So many people that have been praying for years for break through in this arena. It’s hard to imagine that i have been bed bound / wheelchair ♿️ for 5+ years. I have tried to do all i can on my own from using my trapeze bar to lift my self up and try to do atleast maybe 15 reps half a day. Many times if this is done wrong it can hurt me as can just moving forward to much in my wheelchair.

In the last couple months many trials from nearly daily seizures again to bad flares sone pressure issues some not desirable small wounds that took months to heal. But now is the long awaited moment i will post this up to as well.

After 3 years, fighting the medical system. God has provided home health again. From PT, 0T, ST and an evaluator nurse came this morning to get this started. The Nurse was so gracious and even said he would be praying for success. He said i don’t know how far we will get but we will stick with you as we being there should be no issue with cycles of continuance of care. Weekly Skilled Nursing visits for the first couple weeks, a Nurse aide to relieve my mom at-least once a week as well.

This is an answer to prayer 🙌🏽

I can tell you that just like with any other adversity it is easy to be discouraged. God gives strength. I have gone through the stages of grief of my old life, but still to this day… Many times I wake up and wander why can i hum but not talk, why cant i walk, why am I in this bed. To some semblance of reality in that moment It’s been 5+ years but truly going back to the catalyst point Oct 7 2016 My life alteration was in March.

I go blind a lot so sometimes if i don’t see message or respond, I am having difficulty.

If in the midst of all of this you can see one thing in me let it be Jesus. I am tired, I am worn, I am weary, I have definitely been through the fires of trials and tribulations, Defeat & Hope. Battle tested and the pain that goes with that and the passing of 5 years of my life but Jesus is in the midst of it all. I have learned so much and have so much more to learn.
