A Little Irish Luck & A Lot of Heart This St. Patrick’s Day 🍀

Did you know the color originally associated with St. Patrick was blue? 💙 Over time, green became the symbol of Ireland because of its lush landscapes and the shamrock.

Today, we’re celebrating with a little extra green and a whole lot of gratitude.

At IHS, we know that feeling “lucky” often means something simple:
🧡 A safe home
🩵 A steady routine
🧡 A caregiver who shows up with compassion
🩵 Peace of mind for families

We are grateful every day to serve seniors and families across South Dakota. Your trust in us is something we never take for granted.

Wishing you comfort, health, and a touch of Irish cheer today! 🍀

Don’t Forget to Spring Forward Tonight ⏰

Losing an hour of sleep can feel like a lot, especially when medications, routines, and care schedules matter.

Tonight, we move our clocks forward one hour for Daylight Saving Time. 🌷

Here are a few simple ways to make tomorrow smoother:
🧡 Adjust medication reminders and pill organizers
🩵 Double-check medical equipment timers
🧡 Head to bed a little earlier tonight

Even a small time change can affect sleep, mood, and energy levels. A little preparation tonight helps protect health, safety, and peace of mind tomorrow.

Our caregivers are ready to support you through every season!

DEADLINE TONIGHT – HELP PROTECT QUALITY NURSING CARE!

🩵🧡 Nurses are the backbone of healthcare, providing care for your loved ones every single day.

Right now, a proposed rule from the Department of Education could exclude post-baccalaureate nursing degrees from being considered professional, limiting student loan support for advanced nurses and nurse practitioners.

This matters to all of us. South Dakota relies on highly educated nurses to care for patients, especially in rural communities. Limiting access to education could reduce qualified providers, increase healthcare costs, and impact the safety and quality of care for your loved ones.

You can help. Submit a comment today to let the Department of Education know that nurses deserve full access to education assistance and recognition as professional healthcare providers.

💻 Submit your comment here: https://ana.quorum.us/campaign/EDcomment/

In addition, the Nursing Community Coalition (NCC) is circulating a sign on comment letter on the rule. We invite you to sign on and share the Friends of Nursing comment letter:https://www.aacnnursing.org/Portals/0/PDFs/Policy/Letters/2026/Nursing-and-Friends-Letter-Sign-On.pdf

This comment letter is open to all state and national organizations—including NCC member organizations—that wish to advocate for including nursing as a professional degree. Comments are due March 2.

Comment letters should be submitted as pdf files and uploaded here:
https://www.regulations.gov/commenton/ED-2025-OPE-0944-0001

Time is short! Comments are due tonight before midnight. Stand with nurses and the families they care for!

Tell the Department of Education nursing IS a professional degree!

🩵🧡 American Heart Month is a time to pay attention to the small changes that can signal something bigger. Sudden weight gain or swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet may be a sign of fluid retention, which can be related to heart strain.

Knowing what to watch for can make a real difference:

⚖️ Weigh regularly as recommended and note any quick changes
🦵 Watch for new or worsening swelling in the lower legs or feet
🧂 Limit high sodium foods, which can contribute to fluid buildup
💧 Follow provider guidance on fluid intake if restrictions are in place
📞 Report sudden changes to a healthcare provider promptly

Early awareness helps families and caregivers take action sooner and support safer, more comfortable living at home. At IHS, we believe informed care is empowered care. 🩵🧡

🖤 Black History Month Spotlights 🩵🧡

Dr. Patricia Era Bath was a trailblazing ophthalmologist, inventor, and advocate whose work changed the future of vision care. Born in 1942 in New York City, she became the first African American woman doctor to complete a residency in ophthalmology.

Dr. Bath was a leader in eye health research and patient care. In 1981, she became the first woman faculty member at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute, and later co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness to expand access to quality eye care globally.

Her most notable contribution came in 1986, when she invented the Laserphaco Probe, a device that uses laser technology to remove cataracts more precisely and safely than traditional methods. This innovation helped restore vision to thousands of patients and paved the way for modern laser cataract surgery.

Dr. Bath’s work represents courage, brilliance, and a deep commitment to improving quality of life; especially for those in underserved communities. Her legacy continues to inspire healthcare providers around the world.

At Independent Health Solutions, we’re inspired by her innovation and compassion; values we bring into every home we serve. 🩵🧡

As we wrap up Random Acts of Kindness Week today, remember how powerful a few sincere words can be. A genuine compliment can brighten someone’s day in seconds, whether it’s a senior, a coworker, a friend, a family member, or even a stranger.

Noticing someone’s strengths, kindness, or resilience helps reinforce their sense of dignity and self worth. Positive words can lift mood, reduce stress, and remind others they are appreciated for who they are. Said out loud or written, your kind words are transformational. They can spark confidence, inspire hope, and even change how someone feels about themselves and the world around them.

Kindness can be spoken in a single short sentence, yet its impact can ripple far beyond that moment, lasting far longer than you may ever realize.

Let kindness go beyond this week. Make it a habit every day! 🩵🧡
