Celebrating Medical-Surgical Nurses Week! 🏡🩵

Medical-surgical nurses are the backbone of patient care, helping adults recover from surgery, manage chronic conditions, and heal safely at home.

At IHS, we see their impact every day. Our home healthcare nurses follow up after hospital stays, monitor vitals, administer medications, and provide education so patients can thrive in the comfort of their own homes.

💡 Did you know?

• Home visits by skilled nurses can reduce hospital readmissions by up to 25%.
• Med-surg nurses often teach patients and families how to manage care at home, improving independence and confidence.

This week, we honor these incredible nurses for their dedication, compassion, and expertise. And our IHS team is proud to continue their work by bringing expert care to homes across South Dakota. 🩵

🎀 As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, we celebrate progress, awareness, and action. This month, we’ve shared important facts, prevention tips, and the power of support, because awareness saves lives. 💖

We are also proud to highlight that our founder Ashley Kingdon Reese advocated for the Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) Screening Coverage Act, which has now successfully passed the House Ways & Means Committee. This milestone is a huge step forward in expanding access to life-saving cancer screenings, giving more people a chance for early detection and better outcomes. 🚀

At IHS, we continue to raise awareness, educate our communities, and honor the courage of everyone impacted by breast cancer. Every effort counts, every voice matters, and together, we can make a difference. 🌸

We have a special Ace of the Month this October! 🩵🧡

This month, we’re celebrating Mary, a gem in the IHS family who has dedicated many wonderful years to caring for others with kindness, patience, and heart. 🌟

As she prepares for retirement, we want to express our deepest gratitude!

We asked her these questions for inspiration:
1. What inspired you to become a nurse?
A series of experiences prompted me to be a nurse. It takes more experiences to make you better.

2. How long have you been a nurse?
47 Years.

3. What has been the most rewarding part of your nursing career?
Seeing my patients, residents, clients get better and become stronger in their family and community lives; or being silent and supportive for them and their families at their life's end.

4. How has nursing changed since you started?
The technology and legal aspects have changed. We have the tools to do better and the legal aspects have been holding everyone more accountable.

5. What advice would you give to new nurses entering the field?
My advice would be to make sure this is something you truly want to be, not just because it's something your family does.

6. What's one lesson you learned that you wish everyone knew?
Humility makes for the best nurses.

7. Can you share a patient story that deeply impacted you?
I had a patient who I never knew, until the end of her life, that she was my aunt's best friend. She told me the neatest stories about her. My aunt had passed away when I was an infant.

8. What's the funniest or most unexpected thing that ever happened at work?
I started working at HRMC in 1979 with THE BEST RN graduates I have ever known. We worked hard and played harder. We worked as a team.

9. What role did your colleagues play in your experience as a nurse?
My hospital supervisors showed me what needed to be done and why quitting wasn't an option when the going was hard. You finished the job and did it right.

10. What are you most looking forward to in this next chapter?
Time to reflect on my family and being the best wife, mother and grandmother that I can be.

Wishing you all the best in this next chapter, Mary! 💐

🎀 Breast cancer doesn’t play by age rules — it can affect women in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond.

👩‍⚕️ Myth-busting: Young women are not immune. About 11% of breast cancer cases in the U.S. occur in women under 45.

🤝 Support matters: Families, friends, and caregivers play a huge role in recovery and emotional strength.

💖 Prevention and awareness: Regular screenings, healthy lifestyle choices, and knowing your family history are key at any age.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s remember that awareness saves lives, education empowers, and support gives strength. Together, by staying informed and encouraging loved ones to take action, we can make a difference in early detection and survival. 🌸
