🦷 Dentistry 101 Wednesday: What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is like a protective “cap” that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, strength, and function.

Crowns are commonly recommended when:
✔️ A tooth has a large filling
✔️ A tooth is cracked or weakened
✔️ After a root canal
✔️ To cover a dental implant
✔️ To improve the appearance of a misshapen or severely worn tooth

Crowns can be made from porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of materials, and they’re custom designed to match your natural teeth.

With proper care—brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits—a crown can last 10–15 years or even longer.

💡 Dentistry tip: A crown protects the tooth underneath, but it still needs the same great oral hygiene as the rest of your teeth!

It's Throwback Thursday!!!

Did you know...?

Fluoride's dental benefits were discovered in the early 1900s by Dr. Frederick McKay in Colorado Springs, who investigated "Colorado Brown Stain". He and Dr. G.V. Black found that while high natural fluoride levels in water caused mottled enamel (fluorosis), these teeth were paradoxically highly resistant to decay.
By the late 1930s, researchers determined that lower levels of fluoride could protect against decay without causing significant staining.

It's Healthy Mouth Monday!!!

Plain, unsweetened yogurt is excellent for teeth because it is high in calcium and protein, which strengthen enamel. The probiotics (good bacteria) in yogurt combat cavity-causing bacteria, while its low acidity helps maintain a balanced pH in the mouth. Greek yogurt is particularly beneficial due to its higher protein content.

What's your favorite yogurt? Let us know in the comments! 😋

It's Dentistry 101 Wednesday!!!

🦷 What Is a Post and Core After a Root Canal?

After a root canal, a tooth can become weakened because the infected pulp has been removed. If a large portion of the tooth is missing or damaged, your dentist may recommend a post and core to help restore strength and function.

🔹 What is a post?
A post is a small, medical-grade pin placed into the root canal of the tooth. It provides internal support, especially when there isn’t enough natural tooth structure left to hold a restoration.

🔹 What is a core?
The core is a build-up material placed around the post. It rebuilds the tooth’s shape so a crown can be securely placed on top.

🔹 Why is a post and core needed?
✔ Adds stability to a weakened tooth
✔ Helps support a dental crown
✔ Reduces the risk of fracture
✔ Restores proper chewing function
